Spring in the Honeybee World
, , , Honeybees and beekeepers are both at their busiest this time of year. Some honeybees are returning from almond pollination in California. Their keepers bring them to East Texas, because we have abundant pollen, the honeybee’s protein, available to support new bee growth and development. Keep an eye out along the roads for 50 to 100 colonies placed in temporary apiaries. Soon the keepers will split the strong colonies into two or three new colonies of bees. The keeper does this to reduce the swarming instinct in honeybees and to make an additional product, new honeybee colonies, to sell....
What’s that Sound?
, Ever walked by a tree or bush and heard a roar like a freight train? No? Then you are in for a treat! Head to a large oak or holly tree in bloom this time of year, and you will hear – and probably see – thousands of honeybees and other pollinators gathering nectar and/or pollen from the blossoms. Their collective buzz really can be quite unnerving, until you recognize that this as a work of God in your garden. Here is a photo of a blooming American holly in our landscape. How many honeybees and other pollinators can...
Kimball joins Tribune, Bee
Nicole Kimball has joined the Mount Pleasant Tribune and Daingerfield Steel-Country Bee as a staff reporter. Kimball was born and raised in Mount Pleasant and attended Mount Pleasant High School. “As a Mt. Pleasant native, I’m happy to work at the Tribune and Bee,” Kimball said. “Not only is it great to be closer to family, but coming back to this town and seeing how much it’s grown is wonderful. I’m excited for this opportunity to tell the stories of my hometown.” After attending Northeast Texas Community College, she attended University of Texas - Tyler, where she studied Mass Communications. Kimball has worked in broadcast news at stations in Tyler and Wichita Falls. “Nicole is going to be a great asset to these papers,” general manager Miranda Oglesby said. Kimball can be reached at the Mount Pleasant office, via phone at (903) 572-1705, or via email at nicole@steelcountrybee.com.
Springtime Visitors
, Aren’t you glad God created springtime? Friends in Wisconsin wrote recently that they just received 4 more inches of snow. Friends in Nigeria reported more days of seasonal dust storms. Friends in New Zealand said that they are considering moving to NZ’s South Island, where 4 in 10 days are cool and overcast. We are grateful for Northeast Texas’ short winters, long summers, and too-short spring and falls. We finished pruning last week, so orchards, berries, fruit vines, roses, and flowering perennials look great. Light green leaves pop everywhere, and the landscape changes every day. Mexican wild plum has bloomed,...
Pewitt track runs at competitive, rainy Sid Garton Relays in New Boston
The Pewitt track teams spent last Thursday dodging raindrops and searching for medals at the Sid Garton Relays in New Boston. The rains canceled the field events. Joining the Brahmas were the host Lions, DeKalb, Hooks and Pittsburg. Pittsburg’s teams swept the meet, winning all three divisions. The Brahma JV boys finished fourth, while both varsity teams finished fifth. In the varsity boys division, Hooks and DeKalb finished second and third behind the Pirates. Picking up points for the Brahmas were: 100 meters: 3. Trace Goforth, 11.32 200 meters: 6. Kei’drick Hawkins, 24.71 400 meters: 2. Zach Mulch, 55.44 1,600 meters: 5. Jackson Pelfry, 5:18.68; 6. When I can’t breathe!
In the heart of East Texas where I live, where the pine trees whisper secrets about what could have been and the sun casts a golden hue, I encountered a homeless man whose untold story of loss tugged at my heart. His eyes reflected a deepness of sorrow and loss as he shared with me in a moment of vulnerability, “I can’t breathe today; I stopped living when he died.” Curious and concerned, I pressed gently, seeking to understand the source of his pain. “ When who died?” I asked, stepping closer, a silent gesture of my willingness to share his...
A walking stick for leaning
Nick (not his real name) avoided me, for the most part, except to intimidate me by spewing ugly words. And even though he offered horrible phrases, I’ve longed he might trust in Christ. I recently stopped at the parking lot where a church group served lunch to the homeless, and I saw Nick sitting on the curb eating from a styrofoam plate. And I made my way near after getting out of the car. He spoke, “Hi Pam,” a short greeting, like a soothing balm to my heart. I sat down a few feet away, unsure if my old lady self was stuck...
Suitcase of Love
The patrol car drove up and parked, and the officer stepped toward me, where I stood with my homeless friends. “ Who’s Pam?” My homeless friends asked me, ‘ What have you done?” I stood there, unsure what was unfolding, and answered the officer. “I’m Pam. I don’t have any warrants, do I?” He laughed but then got serious. “A young woman was beaten by her boyfriend, and she’s pregnant. And now she’s walking a few blocks away,” he pointed. “She is staying at the women’s battered shelter nearby. Will you talk with her and maybe help her find a church group...
Thirty-third semester trip for Honors students
For the 33nd time, thanks to honors donors such as Drs. Jim and Paula Archer, NTCC honors students were able to take a free, day-trip to a big city. Seventeen students and four faculty drivers left campus at 7:45 a.m., 26 January for a whirlwind experience that began with free breakfasts at Starbucks in Greenville, and ended with the musical, I love you, You’re Perfect, Now Change, in Garland. The itinerary also included an encounter with the Southern Methodist University organist, Benjamin Kolodziej, shopping and skating at the Galleria, a visit to the Dallas cultural district, a special scavenger hunt...
