Toy Trot 5K in Winder aims to raise $30,000 to bring holiday cheer to local children
The Walton-Barrow Board of REALTORS® is inviting runners, businesses and community members to lace up their shoes and help make the holidays brighter for children in need during the 17th Annual Toy Trot 5K on Saturday, Nov. 14, in Winder. Proceeds from the annual event will benefit Shop With A Hero in Barrow County and Hometown Heroes of Walton, programs that give children the opportunity to shop for holiday gifts alongside local heroes. Organizers have set a fundraising goal of $30,000 and are encouraging the community to support the effort through race registration, business sponsorships and donations. Every $250 donated can help provide another child with the opportunity to participate in the holiday shopping experience. Children are identified by school counselors and selected based on need. During the shopping event, each child is paired with a local hero and given a set amount to spend at Walmart. The experience allows children to select gifts for themselves and their loved ones. They also often choose needed personal items. Children can shop for anything in the store except food items, and volunteers help wrap the gifts to make the experience even more special. The Toy Trot will begin at Russell Middle School,

Buford celebrates 10-0 regular season, Bryant Appling's 100th career win
BUFORD — As Buford head football coach Bryant Appling walked off the football field on Friday, he tucked the game ball underneath his arm as he was met with congratulations from fans. With the Wolves’ 57-0 victory over Central Gwinnett, Appling secured his 100th career win as a head coach. “That’s something special,” Buford senior Ian Chaffin said of Appling’s 100th career win. “We’re going to celebrate Coach App tonight and then we will be back in the morning watching film and getting ready for the playoffs. We’re proud of him. He’s the best coach in the world.” In his eighth season as Buford’s head coach, Appling has a career record of 100-8 with six region crowns, four state titles and one national championship. “I try as hard as I can not to think about me because it’s not about me,” Appling said. “I think about all my assistant coaches. Some of these guys have been here longer than me and have been grinding with Coach (Dexter) Wood and Coach (Jess) Simpson and going through tough times. It’s more a testament to what they do and what the kids do than what I do. They just make me look good.”
