Liberty Center team title, 3 individual wins highlight area performances at OHSAA girls cross country state meet
OBETZ, Ohio — Individual winners, team titles, and historic program moments happened for area teams at the OHSAA girls cross country state championships at Fortress Obetz and Memorial Park on Saturday. Southview’s Julia Bocik, Napoleon’s Gwen Huddle, and Ottawa Hills’ Natalie Nixon earned individual championships in Division II, Division III, and Division IV, highlighting the best of local individual results. Liberty Center won the D-IV team title with 112 points. Nobody came close to Huddle (17:35.7), who had nearly an 18-second gap ahead of Marlington’s Irelyn Johnson in second place (17:53.5). In her junior season, Huddle previously posted the Ohio’s best girls’ time this season at districts (17:05.5). “Pressure is a privilege. Pressure makes diamonds,” Huddle said. “I’m just taking it in right now, and I’m going to keep staying hungry for the next year, and I’m ready to one-up what I did this year, and am excited for what’s to come.” Both Huddle and Bocik were the lone representatives for their respective schools. A sophomore, Bocik said she entered each race this season confident. That confidence fueled district and state title-winning efforts. Shortly after finishing in 17:37.7, the weight of the moment had yet to set in for Bocik.

Deputy fire chief placed on paid leave after harassment complaint
A high-ranking Toledo Fire & Rescue Department officer is on paid leave after being accused of sexually harassing behavior. Deputy Chief Danny Brown-Martinez is the subject of an ongoing internal investigation and is on paid administrative leave pending the outcome, said Sheldon Collins, a department spokesman. “Consistent with departmental policy and the collective bargaining agreement, the department will not comment on the specific allegations, circumstances, or details of an ongoing internal investigation,” Mr. Collins said. City spokesman Amy Voigt had no further comment Friday about the disciplinary proceedings. Peter Pattakos, lawyer for Chief Brown-Martinez, said the allegations arose while his client was on medical leave and involve an accuser with an incentive to lie about him. “This involves a public servant with nearly 30 years of exemplary service and no prior disciplinary history,” Mr. Pattakos said. “...There are substantial concerns about how this matter has been handled and whether he has been afforded due process and a fair opportunity to respond.” The attorney said he expects Chief Brown-Martinez to ultimately be vindicated of any wrongdoing.

Briggs: Our updated ranking of the MAC's best football stadiums
SACRAMENTO — Some people climb mountains. Others sail the seven seas or visit the Seven Wonders. I go to Mid-American Conference football stadiums. With my trip last week to cover Toledo at Sacramento State, I’ve now checked all 13 current venues off the bucket list I didn’t know I had. So, naturally, it’s time to revisit our rankings. Borrowing from our list a few years ago, here goes, the top places to watch a football game in the MAC: 1. Glass Bowl, Toledo (capacity: 26,038, opened 1936): Call it a hometown pick, but most MAC coaches, players, and fans would agree. Built as a Works Progress Administration project, the Glass Bowl is an enduring classic. Simply, it’s the one MAC venue that has a big-time feel, from the enclosed horseshoe seating bowl to the three-story tower of suites that wouldn’t be out of place in the Big Ten. 2. Waldo Stadium, Western Michigan (30,200, 1939): Where’s Waldo? Right near the top of our list. I like everything about the place. The hillside setting. The seats on all four sides. The trains rumbling past during games. The horse leading the Broncos onto the field. Throw in Kalamazoo's brewery scene, and you

New Toledo police chief takes reins amid budget challenges
Michael Troendle, who retired Nov. 1 as Toledo police chief, reflected for a moment about not being the city’s top cop anymore. “It’s a surreal feeling after being in the department for 33 years,” he said. “This has been my entire adult life.” Kevin Braun, previously assistant chief, took over as chief Nov. 2. “Change is good,” Mr. Troendle said. “Chief Braun will have newer ideas. That is a good thing. Me leaving opens up opportunities for some of our younger officers to be promoted. You’re breathing in new blood, and that’s a good thing for an organization. I’m excited to see what Kevin does with the department.” Chief Braun, 47, called his new job challenging. “We’ve been lucky enough to have a three-month transition period from the time of the announcement in July,” Chief Braun said. Mr. Troendle has been his mentor, he said. “We worked so closely together. So the transition period was much longer than three months,” Chief Braun said. “I feel about as prepared as a person could feel going into a job. But the reality is, I’ve never been chief here before. I still have a lot to learn.” Top priorities Chief Braun said his
