Punk they/thems to rule the world
Some of my HSJI colleagues are funny, others are witty, and their blogs will reflect that during this week at OSU. I am earnest. So, I cannot help but be in awe of the two mentees assigned to me, 17-year-olds Charlie Bloomer and Sage Besbris. Their sincerity and tenacity for the craft of journalism is one thing, but their bravery to live out loud as two queer, aspiring journalists will help usher in the next generation of newsies that are better, more curious and more open than those who came before them. Sage’s unbridled enthusiasm is contagious. It makes me remember when I was young and hungry and so ready to prove myself to the world. They are not stingy with their thrilled grins and excited chatter. They are sincere and stalwart in their individuality that I have no doubt will take them to great heights with their spiked bangles in place.
Throwing candy in a bag: A powerful bonding activity
At roughly 9 o’clock on a Wednesday night, laughter radiated throughout the dormitory halls, originating from the primary hallway campers used throughout the week. I knew the campers were comparing their days while I was cleaning up, but nothing in their days could have been that funny. That was untrue, to say the least, and after listening to each perspective on the day, I was too lying on the floor laughing until my eyes were spilling with tears.

Student Voices: Uh, guys? The Oreo cake tastes like fruit.
The first meal that I had with all the other kids at the High School Journalism Institute was lunch. It was also the first time we all met each other. I felt extremely nervous, not only because I was sharing my meal with strangers, but also because I tend to have terrible stomach issues in a new environment.
Finding joy in discovering something new
I wasn’t a good student in high school. Dealing with the intense emotions that come with teenagerhood combined with having to choose a career path in four years was a little overwhelming. I went into a daze and let my report card drop to a 1.5 grade point average.
