Annual ‘Huskies and Heroes’ golf tournament in Vail benefits students and soldiers
The annual Huskies and Heroes Golf Tournament was born of a couple of good intentions. One of those came from Vail Realty founder Bart Cuomo’s stint as an assistant football coach at Battle Mountain, where he learned about the lengthy road trips facing athletes, and the high costs of equipment and fees. The other good intention came from a desire to provide a bit of fun to active duty military members — mostly from the U.S. Army’s facility at Fort Carson near Colorado Springs.
Vail ski shop switches summer business away from bikes to another popular pastime
Troy Goldberg had an “a-ha!” moment last summer that changed his summer business plan. Goldberg, the owner of Troy’s Ski Shop on Hanson Ranch Road in Vail Village, had decided earlier in the summer of 2023 to get out of the bicycle rental business. Like snowsports, the bicycle business required new inventory every year. Mechanics were hard to find, as were parts for the new bikes, and switching from summer to winter operations could take weeks.

Most of us don’t even know that we, Holy Cross customers, are also its owners. We usually get a dividend check in the mail once a year that for other utilities would otherwise go to investors, not customers.

Salomone: Just two flies
Dry-fly season has begun. Most of the fly anglers I know never really put their gear away. Seems like a rod is still within reach 12 months a year. But the flies occupying pockets on fishing vests do get sidelined. Dry flies get stashed until the warmth returns and bugs become active. Those days have arrived. The dry-fly season on the Eagle River yield excellent action with just two flies.
