A crowd of sign-wielding Coos County residents took up station at the Coos Bay Boardwalk on Saturday, April 27th, 2024, to rally for Coos County Commissioner candidate Drew Farmer. The 38-year-old Navy veteran drew a crowd of roughly 50 despite blustery conditions. “It’s awesome to see this much support. I’ve had people now from both parties reach out to me, and I’ve worked across the aisles on items. So it’s good to see support across the board, and very good to see this much support...
Letter: We have reached a breaking point in the DA’s office
The District Attorney’s Office needs your help. The staffing levels in the office have always been low. High caseloads were the norm. Even with seven budgeted Deputy DA’s the work was always overwhelming. We did the best we could with what we had. We have reached the breaking point. According to our case management system, last calendar year we had nearly 8,900 referrals. There was simply no way that eight people (myself and seven deputies) could review all those cases. In the interim, I had...
Letter: We deserve better from the City of North Bend
Since 2021 the City of North Bend has regularly had state broadcasted news stories and written online articles viewable nationally framing the city as a place being run by ongoing infighting, bullying, and chaos. This is not modeling professional leadership qualities to our youth. It brings down the entire moral for the entire community. The public reads about this poor conduct and toxic culture prior to thinking about starting a business here, buying a home here, or visiting here. This poor behavior reflects badly on everyone who lives here and impacts us financially. We deserve better service from the City of North Bend. Julia Clabault North Bend
Letter: Vote for Main to keep experience on commission
Coos County voters should re-elect Commissioner Robert “Bob” Main at the May election. He’s been a Coos County commissioner for more than 15 years and is seeking re-election to his fifth four-year term. Translation: Bob Main has more experience running county programs than his two challengers put together. Main has worked for Coos County since 1978 and was elected county assessor in 2000, a job he held until being elected commissioner in 2008. He’s been involved with the Oregon Coastal Zone Management Association, the Southern...

COQUILLE — The cast of the summer melodrama and the singers/dancers who perform in the olios between acts are working at a heady pace to prepare for the opening of this year’s play at the Sawdust Theatre, 120 N. Adams St. “We’ve just started incorporating some special-effect elements into the play rehearsals that I think the audience is really going to enjoy,” said Stacey Lynn Bell, who is directing the 2024 “crimedy,” titled “My, What a Circus” or “Keep Your Big Hands Off My Bigfoot!” ...
Letter: Coos County needs a change
Looking back over the last 10 years, much in our community has changed. It is time for another change. I will be voting for Drew Farmer. Bob Main has served this community well, but it is time to pass the torch. Too many years in one place can stale the effectiveness of anything including Coos Bay. We need new ideas, new faces, new vision. Vote for Drew. Valerie Sill Coos Bay
The Chamber Minute: From the Desk of Rosey Thomas
In for another Chamber minute, it's Rosey. May has arrived, and that means most of us will be getting our ballots this week, Some important things are on the ballot this year, The Chamber is supporting the Public Safety Levy and hopes the community will too. We NEED a SAFE place to call our own and we NEED a solid Public Safety system, now more than ever. Crime is on the rise and we know we cannot leave things as they currently are. If Coos County doesn’t pass the jail levy then the consequences will cause budget cuts all across...
