Greetings to our wonderful volunteers, the doers in Oregon’s Bay Area. You are all tireless in spreading OBAB’s message about making and keeping our area beautiful but you also walk the walk. Thank you for keeping your grabbers handy and picking up trash as you are on your daily walks, when you are with your kids at a playground and as you run errands. One can find colorful displays of creativity upon entering the Artist Loft Gallery in Coos Bay. The gallery is adorned with vibrant watercolor and oil paintings, popping photography, textural pieces of 3-D art and glistening pieces of jewelry.

Life jackets recommended for stand up paddleboards
The Oregon State Marine Board is urging people operating stand up paddleboards (SUPs) on moving water (primarily rivers) to always wear a life jacket and never wear an ankle or leg leash designed for general flatwater use. “There’s an emerging trend when we look at the causes for fatalities in recent years where a person, otherwise well outfitted, died because their leash to the SUP became entangled in brush or other debris on area rivers,” said Brian Paulsen, Boating Safety Program Manager for the Marine...
Coos Bay takes a multi-year approach for this year’s budget
On July 1st, the Coos Bay’s city budget for 2024-25 was adopted as approved by the budget committee during the May 9th meeting. City budgets run from July 1st through the following year June 30th and take months to prepare. The city of Coos Bay took a straightforward look at the budget by considering a multi-year approach as they decided on how to distribute this year’s funds into needed infrastructure around the city. Sewer system cleaning on South 10th Street
On Thursday, July 25th, City staff will be performing routine cleaning of the sewer system on South 10th Street. Cleaning will start after 8am and end no later than 530pm. Traffic will be reduced to one lane. Flaggers will be on site directing traffic while cleaning operations take place. Minor delays may be experienced. Storm system repairs on North 8th Terrace
On Friday, July 26th, City staff will begin storm system repairs on North 8th Terrace, between North 8th and 10th Streets above the Mingus Park ballfields. Work is anticipated to be completed by Tuesday July 30th. Repairs will begin after 8am each workday and end no later than 530pm. The street will be closed to through traffic during work hours. Accommodation will be made to maintain local access. Minor delays may be experienced. Please exercise caution when traveling through the work zone. What better way to conclude a weekend-long celebration than with a little friendly competition? Staff with the City of North Bend ended their July Jubilee 121st birthday celebration by challenging the City of Coos Bay to a softball game. Area athletes win regional Junior Olympics titles
Four South Coast athletes won titles in the recent Junior Olympics Northwest Regional track and field championships in Gresham. Mason Detzler of Myrtle Point, competing unattached, won the men’s (17-18 years old) discus with a throw of 167-11 and shot put with an effort of 57-9. Campfires temporarily banned at most Oregon state parks
Oregon Parks and Recreation Department (OPRD) temporarily banned campfires at most Oregon State Parks due to dry conditions and the strain on firefighting resources from wildfires burning across the state. Campfires and open flames are banned at all parks east of the Cascades due to the low humidity and risk of wildfires. They’re also restricted at parks in high-risk areas across the state until conditions improve. Teen injured by BB gun shot in Bandon; Neighbor arrested for assault
On July 22, 2024, at approximately 6:45 PM, Coos County Dispatch received a 911 call reporting an injury to a teenage minor at a residence on Beach Loop Road in Bandon. Researchers enhance tool to better predict where, when wildfires will occur
A newly enhanced database is expected to help wildfire managers and scientists better predict where and when wildfires may occur by incorporating hundreds of additional factors that impact the ignition and spread of fire. “There is a tremendous amount of interest in what enables wildfire ignitions and what can be done to prevent them,” said Erica Fleishman, an Oregon State University professor. “This database increases the ability to access relevant information and contribute to wildfire preparedness and prevention.” ...
