Officials share safety measures for spring breakers

Columbia, Mo. (KMIZ)-

Mid-Missouri students are taking a break this week, as both the University of Missouri , Columbia Public Schools , and Jefferson City Schools are on spring break. Students are looking forward to stepping away from their studies for a week.

However, concerns have arisen about safety and ensuring everyone returns to campus next week following the discovery of MU student Riley Strain .

Triple A says spring breakers often head to beach destinations or major cities to enjoy their week-long break. TSA reports a significant increase in travel numbers compared to last year, exceeding 220,000 additional travelers.

However, according to a survey from Triple A Consumer Pulse across several states, only 31% of respondents said they were planning a trip for spring break. 54% stated they were not, and 15% were uncertain about their plans.

Regardless of location, it's crucial to prioritize safe drinking practices. The Virginia Tech Police Department recommends using a buddy system, sticking together, or establishing meeting places and return times in case of separation.

The department also advises to only accept drinks you have watched being prepared and avoid drinking in hot tubs due to potential health risks. They also say to stay hydrated and wear sunscreen to avoid having a heat stroke and melanoma.

The department encourages carrying a compact user-friendly self-defense devices such as pepper spray or a personal alarm. Additionally, Virginia Tech Police Department recommends establishing a code word among friends to signal when you feel uncomfortable and need assistance.
