Edible garden tour explores sustainable growing in Central Columbia
Columbia residents learned about gardening while enjoying home-grown snacks during the annual Edible Columbia Garden Tour put on by the Mid-Missouri Peaceworks’ Center for Sustainable Living on Sunday in Columbia. Participants were shown three backyard gardens along with more in-depth tours of the Veterans Urban Farm and the Ann Street Community Garden. At each location, hosts served food or drinks using ingredients from their gardens. Examples included a lemon grass, lemon balm and spice bush tea, a kale salad and a potato salad. The event has occurred every year for over a decade and draws a variety of people who are eager to learn more about how they can grow and utilize their own gardens.

Eagle 102 Mother-of-all-Gift-Baskets winner announced
KJFM NEWS — Congratulations to Doris Love of Louisiana, the winner of the Mother-Of-All-Gift-Baskets! Doris was nominated by her daughter, Anna Lower, who lives in Columbia. Doris is a retired nurse and has been traveling over an hour and a half on a weekly basis to help out Anna and her family when they lost their childcare provider. Anna says that Doris is the best person she could ask for and their family is so blessed to have her. Congratulations, Doris!
Albert-Oakland pool closes Thursday due to chemical imbalance
COLUMBIA − Columbia Parks and Recreation says it will close the Albert-Oakland Family Aquatic Center at 2:30 p.m. Thursday due to a chemical imbalance in the water. The imbalance is due to a continuing mechanical problem, according to a Facebook post from Parks and Rec. The pool had to close Saturday due to the same issue. It reopened Monday for Memorial Day.
STATE HISTORICAL SOCIETY OF MISSOURI TO SCREEN FILM ON “MISSOURI WOODSTOCK” HELD IN SEDALIA IN 1974
The public is invited to a film screening documenting the largest music festival held in Missouri almost 50 years ago. Two screenings of the film, “The Story of the Ozark Music Festival: Three Days of Sodom and Gomorrah in Sedalia, Missouri,” will be shown at 2 p.m. and 7 p.m., Friday, June 9, at the Center for Missouri Studies in Columbia. The free public event is sponsored by the State Historical Society of Missouri. In between the two screenings, musicians Pat Kay, Ben Miller, and Emma Burney, will be live in concert from 4:30 p.m. – 6:30 p.m. Food trucks will also be on site during the outdoor music performance for food purchases. The event is open to the public with limited seating for both film screenings on a first-come, first-serve basis. No registration or reservations are required.
Newly-branded Columbia music festival provides music education to underpriviledged kids
A mid-Missouri music festival this weekend in Columbia is operating under a new name with hopes of raising funds to help aspiring musicians. The Local Fest which existed before the pandemic is returning this year under its new name, Compass Fest. Compass Programs Director Violet Vonder Haar says the name seemed more fitting and also opens the festival to grow in the future with potential out-of-town artists. All funds raised from the event will go toward the organization’s scholarship fund, which provides access to private music lessons and camps to children who might not otherwise be able to afford private lessons.
Popular Columbia restaurant closing its Peachtree location
Columbia’s popular 44 Stone Public House says it will close its doors on Peachtree drive in July, after more than 12 years in operation. 44 Stone Public House will close after a final day of service on Saturday July 1. They say “it is with a frustrated and heavy heart that this unexpected announcement is made.” 44 Stone House made the announcement on its Facebook page, saying the restaurant is doing as well as ever, thanks to a very local following.
