Meet Keisha Lance Bottoms' family, including her husband and 4 kids

Keisha Lance Bottoms will soon be governor of the state where her great-great-grandparents were once enslaved. The former Atlanta mayor was elected governor of Georgia on Nov. 3, making her the first Black woman anywhere in the country to hold that position. Bottoms, who was born in Atlanta in 1970, has said she is the great-great-granddaughter of Shephard Peek, who was sold as a slave in 1826 in Crawfordsville, Georgia. In a 2019 X post , Bottoms said Peek is believed to have become a member of Congress after the Civil War. Two hundred years later, Bottoms was selected to lead her home state, making her one of five Black governor-elects in the United States after Tuesday's midterm elections. Bottoms, an attorney, has been married for more than three decades to Derek Bottoms, whom she met in law school and with whom she shares four children. Here's what to know about Bottoms' family. Keisha Lance Bottoms met her husband in law school Bottoms and her husband, Derek Bottoms, married in October 1994 . They both attended law school at Georgia State University. The two met as first-year law students in 1991 and were engaged in 1993 before graduating in June

Atlanta Boomers Are Moving To This Scenic Florida City With Affordable Living And Sandy Beaches

There are many reasons why someone would choose to live in Atlanta. It has a bustling downtown area with attractions and restaurants, and it's a major corporate hub. But for Boomers born between 1946 and 1964 who are no longer in the workforce, the hustle and bustle of daily life in the big city may no longer be serving them. For those looking for a more laid-back lifestyle, Florida's Panama City, located in the Panhandle, could be worth considering. Panama City's proximity to Gulf Coast beaches offers opportunities for frequent beach trips, and recent migration data suggests that the surrounding area is attracting some Atlanta baby boomers.

Can Atlanta squeeze a new MARTA station onto the Beltline?

Atlanta Beltline officials are studying whether a proposed station near Adair Park could become MARTA's first new heavy-rail stop in more than 25 years. Why it matters: If built, the Murphy Crossing infill station along the Southwest Trail could be the first rail station that connects with the Beltline trail and the long-debated rail line envisioned for it. Zoom in: The proposed station would be built between MARTA's West End and Oakland City stations and near the Beltline's planned 20-acre Murphy Crossing redevelopment of a former state farmers market property. How it works: Beltline principal engineer Shaun Green told residents at an Oct. 29 meeting not far from the proposed station's site that planners are evaluating five concepts. Options include building platforms alongside existing elevated MARTA tracks and rerouting the tracks to accommodate a new station. All would be significant construction projects. Yes, but: The area under consideration features a busy state highway, a city street, active freight lines and elevated MARTA train lines. Underneath the congested corridor there's the popular Beltline trail. "There's no way to fit this into the existing area without there being some [impacts]," Green said. AROUND TOWN: Georgia’s last Democratic governor has advice for its next one

The day after Georgia elected its first Democratic governor in over two decades, the last person to hold that distinction spoke in Cobb County. Roy Barnes, who served as Georgia’s governor from 1999 to 2003, addressed the Rotary Club of Marietta Wednesday. Georgia’s last Democratic governor opened his remarks by joking that he didn’t know what to talk about. He went on to analyze the 2026 midterm election results from the night before, and gave his perspective on why the Democratic Party had such banner results across the nation. Barnes chalked up the widespread Democratic victories to national frustrations with President Donald Trump’s administration. “Donald Trump crisscrossed primarily the Southeast and Midwest, and told the crowds that were listening, ‘Vote like I'm on the ballot,’” he said. “And they did.” Former Atlanta Mayor Keisha Lance Bottoms was elected as Georgia’s first Democratic mayor in over two decades since Barnes left office, and became the first Black woman to be elected governor of any state. Barnes expressed optimism about Bottoms’ future as governor, noting she will be Georgia’s first governor since 1966 to not come through the Georgia General Assembly. “I think it's going to be a learning curve for her,”

Bottoms faces task of bridging divide between metro Atlanta, rural Georgia

Georgia just elected a governor who didn’t need rural Georgia to win. That may turn out to be the most important fact about this election, more important than the size of Keisha Lance Bottoms’ margin or how badly the polls missed it. The question now is what her victory means for rural Georgia, and for any state policy that hopes to address its problems.
