CLEMSON – The sixth-ranked Tigers defeated Charlotte 8-5 Tuesday night at Doug Kingsmore Stadium.

Alden Mathes hit his seventh bomb of the season in tonight’s game against the 49ers improving Clemson to 30-6 this season and 11-4 in ACC.

Charlotte was the first to score after hitting back to back homers in the top of the second for a lead 2-0.

Clemson answered back and scored six in the bottom of the frame. The Tigers started with singles from Jimmy Obertop and Jarren Purify to put runners on for Tristan Bissetta to hit an RBI single. Clemson took the lead with a two run double from Jacob Jarrell and an RBI double from Cannarella. Mathes reached on an error that scored Cannarella and Blake Wright singled to score Mathes for a 6-2 lead.

The 49ers plated two more runs in the third with a single, double, and an RBI groundout to cut their deficit to 6-4.

Charlotte scored one in the seventh before Clemson’s Rocco Reid came in to end the threat and finished the inning.

After Charlotte scored a run in the top of the seventh, Mathes hit his seventh homer, a solo shot, to the Chapman Grandstands to extend the lead back to 7-5.

The Tigers picked up an insurance run in the bottom of the eighth thanks to two Charlotte errors to cap off the 8-5 win.

Lucas Mahlstedt came in to relieve starting pitcher Billy Barlow. Barlow threw 2.2  innings while Mahlstedt pitched 4.0 innings, three scoreless with three strikeouts. He gave up two hits with one earned run.
