Clemson head coach Dabo Swinney appeared on ACC Network’s ACC PM show and raved about his freshman receiver Monday.
Five-star wide receiver Bryant Wesco arrived on campus with high expectations and has matched them both physically and mentally. When freshmen arrive on campus, Swinney knows that you only know so much but Wesco’s mentality is why he’s making noise early.
“You get these guys in here as freshmen, you never really know exactly where they are till you start coaching them and some guys, you come in and you see the talent right away but maybe the maturity and even the commitment is not quite where it needs to be,” Swinney said. “He’s a kid, from day one, the commitment is above the talent and it just drives everything. He’s very conscientiousness, he can take things from the meeting rooms to the practice field.
It didn’t take long for the public to realize Wesco’s talent. In the Orange-White game, he had three catches for 26 yards, including a highlight touchdown. Wesco twirled and made the catch in the corner of the endzone.
Wesco has the height and skills at 6-foot-2, but the 170 pounds is where Swinney has him focusing. Adding size before the season and beyond is crucial and Wesco is already making progress in that regard.
“He’s already put on about eight or nine pounds and he’s still going to be a developing guy between now and August. He just took right to it and he had a lot of opportunity…man, he took advantage of it and really showed that he’s a guy that can play and he’s definitely going to be a guy that can help us,” Swinney said.
This is only a small part of a receiver unit that Swinney has high hopes for. He said it’s the “first time in a while” Clemson has returned a group of proven wideouts. That includes last year’s freshman star Tyler Brown, Adam Randall, Cole Turner and Troy Stellato.
Add in the summer enrollee and five-star TJ Moore. There you have a deep and talented unit. Wesco has already proved to be a key part of it and he’s just getting started.
