(FOX40.COM) — A new multi-use trail in Citrus Heights opened earlier this month, decades after a version of it was first proposed.

The Arcade-Cripple Creek Trail, formerly referred to as the Electric Greenway project, runs 2.9 miles from Sunrise Boulevard, near Arcade Creek Park Preserve, to Wachtel Way between Pitalo Way and Pheasant Ridge Lane.

The trail follows an easement intended for use by the Sacramento Municipal Utility District.

According to the City of Citrus Heights, the SMUD corridor was identified as a possible multi-use trail “as early as the 1970s.” The first official steps for the project were taken in 2014 when the city approved a study to see if building the trail was feasible.

The city says construction on the trail began in October 2022.

According to the city, the trail connects “several neighborhoods to eight parks, several schools and the Sunrise MarketPlace.”
