Iowa city ranks among the nation's worst for rat infestations

Corn bears aren't real in Iowa , but rats certainly are. The pest control company Orkin has unveiled its list of the rattiest cities in America , and an Iowa city made the list for the first time. Aw, rats! Which Iowa city has the worst rat infestations? This is the first time Cedar Rapids has made it into the top 50 worst cities for rats, landing at 36th on the list. Rats love making homes in and around buildings, beneath vegetation and anywhere they can find protection from predators and the elements, the report said. Cities provide the prime resources for them to thrive. “There’s no single type of city or climate that’s immune to rodent pressure,” said Dr. Shannon Sked, National Technical Director at Orkin. Cedar Rapids also made Orkin's list for the cities with the worst bed bug infestations in July. More: Two Iowa cities are among the nation's worst for bed bug infestations See Orkin's top 50 rattiest cities Here's a look at the top 50 rattiest cities in America, according to Orkin, and their change in the rankings since last year: Los Angeles Chicago New York San Francisco Washington, DC (+1) Detroit (+1) Cleveland (+4)

Iowa County may help Marengo with limited city attorney duties

MARENGO — Iowa County has tentatively agreed to share its county attorney with the City of Marengo in a limited capacity. Marengo’s city attorney, Gage Kensler, resigned after being named magistrate in Benton County, according to Marengo City Administrator Ellen O’Rourke. The city was waiting for a proposal from one law firm, O’Rourke said following a city council meeting Oct. 28, but few firms are willing to provide city attorneys. Marengo Mayor Travis Schlabach said he’d reached out to several with no luck. Schlabach and Marengo Police Chief Ben Gray asked the Iowa County Board of Supervisors Oct. 30 if the county attorney would take care of the city’s traffic tickets. Gray said the city averages about two a month. County Attorney Tim McMeen and Assistant County Attorney Tim Dille said they’d be willing to help the city in that limited capacity. They wouldn’t handle nuisance complaints, dog bites or other violations. Supervisor Kevin Heitshusen said that McMeen’s law firm has clients outside of the the county and McMeen could take on the city’s needs through his law office without approval from the board of supervisors. McMeen said he prefers to have the contract go through the county. He and

Marengo agrees to pay $5,700 to settle zoning dispute

MARENGO — The Marengo City Council approved a settlement with Kristen Miller, of 344 W Lucas Street last month after she objected to a zoning change for property next door. Miller’s property adjoins 1403 Lafayette Avenue owned by Marengo Memorial Hospital operating under the name Compass Memorial Healthcare. Compass was not involved in the settlement. Miller and her attorney, Jeff Taylor, first addressed the city council Nov. 26, 2025 after the city, according to Taylor, didn’t respond to a notice of appeal filed on Miller’s behalf Nov. 10. Miller objected to a parking lot constructed by Compass Memorial Healthcare on the adjacent property at the corner of West Lucas Street and Lafayette Avenue. Both Miller’s property and the hospital’s property are zoned residential, Taylor said. A special use was approved by the zoning board, but the permit is supposed to go before the board of adjustment, which it didn’t, said Taylor. Property owners who would be affected by the zoning change should have been informed by letter, said Taylor, but they weren’t. Miller was concerned about her privacy and asked the hospital to put up a fence. During the Dec. 30 city council meeting, Miller asked the city to put
