CHARLESTON, WV (WOWK) – With dangers both in class and online, there’s an ever-growing threat to student safety. To combat the situation, the West Virginia Department of Education is teaming up with the FBI.

The WVDE is hosting a series of regional school safety meetings, the first of which took place Tuesday in Charleston. The goal is to discuss ways school administrators and teachers can better protect students both in and out of the classroom.

The FBI says they’re seeing increasing threats that can trap young students into scary situations, so they’re sharing new strategies and new technologies to help combat potential predators.

“The more the parents know, the more the teachers know, the more the school administrators know what our kids are doing – the more all of those people know what the threats are, the more likely we are to keep our kids safe. And that’s our goal here today,” said FBI Pittsburgh Assistant Special Agent in Charge Richard Evanchec

The WVDE used the Grants and Planning System to streamline the process, submitting safety plans and tagging important data for students who may be at risk.
