A state trooper fatally shot a man during a car chase on a rural highway in Carroll County on Tuesday afternoon, according to the GBI.

Jason Scott Fletcher, 51, of Hogansville, was identified by the state agency as the man killed during the officer-involved shooting. No law enforcement officers were injured.

The incident began with Carroll sheriff’s deputies investigating complaints of mail theft near the 500 block of Little New York Road in Carrollton around 3 p.m. Deputies encountered Fletcher driving and attempted to stop him, but the GBI said he refused to pull over and a chase ensued.

As the chase continued toward Roopville, which is about 10 miles south of Carrollton, deputies asked the Georgia State Patrol for assistance.

A trooper attempted to stop Fletcher by using stop sticks, a tire deflation device, at the intersection of Ga. 5 and Banks Circle, the GBI said. Fletcher is accused of swerving his vehicle and attempting to hit the trooper, according to the GBI.

That’s when the trooper fired at Fletcher, striking him, the agency said.

Fletcher was taken to Tanner Medical Center in Carrollton, where he died.

This is the 25th shooting involving law enforcement the GBI has been asked to investigate so far this year and the fourth this month.
