Man pleads guilty to obstruction
A Ladysmith man accused of resisting or obstructing an officer after his brother allegedly led a Rice Lake police officer on a high-speed chase through the city pleaded guilty to the charge on Thursday in Barron County Circuit Court. Jacob J. Shimko, 38, appeared before Judge J.M. Bitney and pleaded guilty to misdemeanor resisting or obstructing an officer. Two felony counts of bail jumping were dismissed but read into the record. Bitney ordered Shimko to pay court costs and he was given 60 days to pay or set up a payment plan. An arrest warrant had been ordered for Shimko as he had not appeared on May 8 as scheduled. It was never issued as the defendant appeared in court the next day.

SPOONER — The Spooner City Council approved transfer of a Class B liquor license from La Cabana to Nick’s La Cabana Restaurant at their meeting Tuesday, May 7. Steve Olsen of Corporation Southern Enterprises of Spooner, Inc., who owns Nick’s Family Restaurant, the La Cabana Mexican restaurant and River Street Restaurant, asked for the transfer from La Cabana, 527 N. CodeRED offers free emergency alert notifications
Barron County has contracted with CodeRED to allow anyone throughout the county the opportunity to receive free emergency alert notifications and weather warnings that require immediate action. These notifications include emergency evacuations, shelter-in-place instructions, missing children alerts, tornado warnings, etc. Anyone wanting the free service of emergency or weather alerts sent to their cell phone, VoIP phone, or email accounts needs to register by visiting barroncountywi.gov/sheriff and clicking on the CodeRED icon in the left column. Additionally, the registration page will allow users the opportunity to sign up to receive emergency weather warnings. Users will have the option to receive alerts anytime the National Weather Service issues a tornado warning, severe weather warning or flash flood warning for the address entered on the enrollment page. This system will only notify people if their exact address is in the warned polygon area issued by the National Weather Service so they only receive alerts that pertain to them.
Track team scores well at Boyceville Invite, Regionals and Sectionals next week
BOYCEVILLE, WI – The regular season is winding down for the Spring Valley track teams and with that comes some of their best times of the season. Last week the Cardinals were rained out at Colfax earlier in the week but had the opportunity to compete here at the Boyceville Invite last Thursday. The chance to compete was clear as the boys’ team had their best showing of the season, finishing in third place of nine teams. The girls’ team had really good showings as well, finishing in seventh place out of eight scoring teams with 54 points.
