Camden’s interim school superintendent is scheduled to end his work in the county sometime next month. Who will lead the 1,958-student district after then remained unknown as of Tuesday.

The Camden Board of Education has been meeting in closed session to discuss personnel-related matters in recent months, including on May 9. At that meeting, the school board recognized students and other district achievements without providing any update on its superintendent search before retiring for a closed session.

The board is also scheduled to meet behind closed doors again on Thursday at 6 p.m. at the school district’s central office. The topic again is “one or more confidential personnel matters,” according to a press release.

Interim Superintendent Dr. Michael Bracy has been at the reins of the Camden County Schools since October, following the abrupt resignation of former superintendent Linda Jewell Carr in September. He said in a previous interview that he plans to complete his work in Camden in June.

Dr. Jason Banks, chairman of the Camden Board of Education, declined to provide any details this week on the board’s search for a new schools superintendent. He said he could not release the number of applicants the district has received for the vacant job, whether or not any are North Carolinians, or say whether or not the board has settled on a finalist.

“I really cannot divulge that information at this time as it is a privileged closed-session matter,” he wrote in an email. “However, I suspect we will be able to provide more information very soon. Perhaps later this week. Also, there should be more information after the June 4th joint meeting.”

Banks was referring to a meeting scheduled for June 4th between the Camden Board of Education and Camden Board of Commissioners.

The selection of a superintendent looms as the school board oversees the start of construction of a new high school. Bracy said in an interview last month the project is moving forward.

According to Bracy, applications from subcontractors who will actually build the school were due on April 12 and their selection would be made on Tuesday of this week.

Camden school and county officials broke ground on the new $80 million high school project on May 21, 2021. The school will be located off N.C. Highway 343 about two miles north of the current high school.

The county is using $50 million in state grant funds toward the cost of construction. The county also has $33 million in approved bond funds, bringing the total amount available for construction costs to $83 million.

The high school, set to open August 2026, is projected to include 130,080 square feet while the school’s early college is projected to be 17,254 square feet.
