This Lake Erie island owned by an American president is up for sale
CATAWBA ISLAND – Former President Rutherford B. Hayes private Lake Erie island is for sale, for a presidential price. Sitting off Catawba Island, the heavily wooded seven acres of Mouse Island is completely uninhabited, but it wasn’t always that way. Rutherford B. Hayes’ Mouse Island was never Mar-a-Lago. According to Lake Erie islands historian Mike Gora, it was considered their summer residence in 1874. His was the only property ever put on the island. The tiny island off Catawba Point is seen by Miller Ferry passengers as they go to Put-in-Bay. The property was sold by the Hayes family in 1966. According to realtor Kyle M. Recker, the agent from Howard Hanna of Port Clinton, it was most recently owned by a Hayes employee who had inherited the property. Calling it the "Hawaii of Ohio," and “A truly exceptional real estate investment, Mouse Island presents a rare canvas for your vision,” Recker wrote. The asking price? $5 million. It is surrounded by rocks and there is a reef that can be a safety hazard to boats. Gora said that the island gained some notoriety on July 3, 2006, when a 41-foot pleasure craft was beached on the island. Recker said
