What is a QLCS tornado?
Laura asks, “Can you explain what a QLCS is and what conditions can cause it? Often hear QLCS tornado.”. QLCS stands for ‘Quasi-linear convective system’ which is another way of describing a line of thunderstorms, such as a squall line. These storms form along and ahead of a surface boundary, usually a cold front, but can also form along a stalled or stationary boundary. Winds at the surface help transport a warm/moist air mass while strong winds aloft help to sustain the storms. Sometimes the linear storms can initially start out as individual thunderstorms, known as supercells, before merging into the line. This often occurs late in the day or at night as the low-level jet strengthens and helps sustain the storms.

The Chicagoland Area is Warming Up to the Idea of a Strong El Niño Season
A tornado touched down in Glen Ellyn on July 27, cutting a path through the town that missed the College of DuPage (COD) campus by a few miles. While winds reached over 60 mph on campus grounds, Glen Ellyn was fortunate enough to see little damage. The town was far from alone; this year has seen a significant uptick in tornado activity, with over 200 reported touching down in Illinois alone. Only three-quarters of the way into the year, this well surpasses the previous Illinois record of 142 in 2024.

September’s scorching start gives way to a cooler change
We’ve seen quite the heat to start September across the Stateline, and it’s already making a noticeable mark in the record books. In fact, we are now well-above average when it comes to 90-degree days for the month as Rockford on average sees just one 90-degree day during September, but last week’s late-summer heat wave delivered 4 of them all by itself. That recent stretch of hot weather has also pushed our yearly total for 90° days up to 17.

Continued dangerous heat Friday with some relief through the weekend
Heat and humidity will unfortunately stick around for another day here across the state line with the 4th day in a row of 90° temperatures on tap. Dewpoints won’t offer any relief either as temperatures will be in the low 70’s which will send heat advisories near and above 100° once again today. Because of this, heat advisories are in effect through 10pm this evening so make sure to continue to practice heat safety once again.

Temperatures for the third day in a row warmed into the low 90s, with Rockford’s high reaching 90-degrees. Areas to the north and northeast stayed in the 80s while west and southwest of Rockford warmed into the low to mid 90s with heat index readings reaching above 100 degrees.
