Man arrested after hostage standoff in Rockford
ROCKFORD, Ill. (WIFR) - Early Monday morning, Rockford police responded to a home for a report of a violent domestic disturbance involving a suspect with a gun. Around 1:30 a.m. Monday at the 200 block of Howard Ave, police found Jamarious Shoulders, 27, a woman and four children inside a home. Rockford Police SWAT and hostage negotiations responded to the scene and safely removed the woman and four children from the home.
33 Rockford-area restaurants to benefit from pandemic relief funds

When periodical cicadas appear in Illinois this month, they will mostly be from one of two groups in a rare dual emergence — an event unseen since 1803. The southern half of Illinois will see the appearance of Brood XIX, also known as the Great Southern Brood, which emerges every 13 years. (In addition, some early arrivals from the Mississippi Valley Brood may emerge.) The upper half of the state — including Chicago, Rockford and Peoria — will see Brood XIII, the Northern Illinois Brood, on a 17-year cycle.

Rockford City Council to vote on plan that would move 11th St powerlines underground
ROCKFORD, Ill. (WIFR) - Changes could be headed to 11th Street in Rockford if the City Council approves a plan to move several blocks of powerlines. The improvement plan is part of the 11th Street redevelopment project, a project between the city and the state to revamp portions of the Forest City. Powerlines from 15th to 23rd Street are expected to be relocated underground in an effort to give that area a much-needed face-lift. But ComEd’s external affairs manager George Gaulrapp says the movement is not just for beautification, it will make the area much safer.
Dementia Friendly Rockford brings back musical memories with free concert
ROCKFORD, Ill. (WIFR) - A special invitation was sent to people with dementia and their loved ones for a free concert Monday at the Coronado Performing Arts Center. Dementia Friendly Rockford, Friends of the Coronado and the Land of Lincoln Theatre Organ Society (LOLTOS) put together the one-hour-long complimentary “Magical Monday” Grande Barton organ concert. An organist from LOLTOS played Broadway show tunes on the Coronado’s restored 1927 Grande Barton pipe organ. Dementia Friendly Rockford hopes the old organ and familiar music bring back fond memories for those with dementia and their loved ones.
