When periodical cicadas appear in Illinois this month, they will mostly be from one of two groups in a rare dual emergence — an event unseen since 1803. The southern half of Illinois will see the appearance of Brood XIX, also known as the Great Southern Brood, which emerges every 13 years. (In addition, some early arrivals from the Mississippi Valley Brood may emerge.) The upper half of the state — including Chicago, Rockford and Peoria — will see Brood XIII, the Northern Illinois Brood, on a 17-year cycle.

ROCKFORD, Ill. (WIFR) - Jeremy “Trixie” Wilson says you can never prepare for the things that come with a cancer diagnosis. Trixie, who is from Rockford, was diagnosed with Stage 3 testicular cancer. In January, the mass was removed and unfortunately found to be malignant. The cancer cells have now spread to his abdominal lymph nodes and his left lung. He began four rounds of chemo treatment on Feb. 26.

Rockford residents could chip in to bury 11th Street utility lines
ComEd customers in Rockford could be asked to chip in to bury electrical lines along 11th Street next year as the city begins a three-year reconstruction of the corridor. Burying the lines is expected to cost ComEd about $4.6 million. The utility is allowed under the Illinois Public Utilities Act to recoup that cost from rate payers, Interim Public Works Director Timothy Hinkens said.
