182-unit apartment complex to be built near Walnut Lawn and Maryland in Springfield
Residents of a south Springfield neighborhood spoke out against an amended rezoning ordinance at Monday night’s City Council meeting. Developers of a multi-story apartment complex requested the just over 7 1/2-acre site at 3302 S. Maryland be rezoned from Planned Development No. 13, 3rd Amendment, and R-SF, Single-Family Residential District, to Planned Development No. 395.

Galloway developer seeks demolition on property at center of 2022 vote
Developers of a project in Galloway Village that saw their rezoning request overturned in a public vote in 2022 appear to be back with new plans for the property. Permits that would make way for a demolition on the site at 3535 S. Lone Pine Ave. are pending with the city. Wrecking and plumbing permits applications submitted April 29 to the city also are pending for the property in Galloway, which was a part of the properties subject to be rezoned to make way for a mixed-use development. In November 2022, Springfield voters sided with the neighborhood in a landslide vote on a referendum question to stop the development, which included multi-story apartments with commercial storefronts. When the mixed-development plans first appeared, the Galloway Village neighbors tried to designate the largest white building at 3535 S. Lone Pine Ave. as a historic city site. The white building on the property was constructed in 1929, as the Sequiota Store, and later known as Treadway's Store. The historic designation was not approved by Springfield City Council in 2019 largely due to opposition of the owner of the property, Mitchell Jenkins, according to previous News-Leader reporting. The News-Leader has reached out to Jenkins

Springfield voters again reject increase to tax for convention center
(This story was updated to include full results and a statement from Friends of SGF PAC.) Armed with additional information about the city's plans for a $175 million convention center, voters once again rejected an increase to the lodging tax that would have funded the downtown project. With all precincts reporting, the tax measure failed with 57.87% of voters voting against the increased tax, according to uncertified results from the Greene County Clerk's Office. After asking voters for a second time to increase the lodging tax collected on hotel rooms and short-term rentals by 3% to fund expansion and renovation of the Springfield Expo Center at 635 E. St. Louis St., the city will once again have to rethink what comes next. The same question was asked in November and also failed. This time around, the tax included a 35-year sunset, and the city had shared additional details about the project, including concept illustrations produced by a global architecture firm. “We respect the decision of our voters and appreciate the time they took to learn about the proposal and make their voices heard," Mayor Jeff Schrag said in a news release. "Our next steps will be to take what we
