Paul Rudd, Overland Park get a shout-out when CNN announces Adam Hamilton victory

Welp, we did not have “Paul Rudd” on our election night bingo card. But the “Ant-Man” actor scored a surprise shout-out as Jake Tapper on CNN announced that Adam Hamilton defeated Kansas Senator Roger Marshall in a shocking win Tuesday. Tapper threw the live coverage to Hamilton headquarters in Overland Park, “the home of Paul Rudd,” he said. Rudd, born in New Jersey, spent much of his childhood in Johnson County then studied theater at the University of Kansas. And Tapper would know that because the CNN anchor is a regular celebrity guest at Big Slick, the annual Children’s Mercy fundraiser that Rudd co-hosts. In October, Rudd co-hosted a get-out-the-vote event in New York with “Hamilton” creator Lin-Manuel Miranda and former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton. The event raised money for Latino Victory Project and Onward Together , nonprofit groups that work on voter mobilization and getting people involved in the political process. Jimmy Fallon, Adam Scott and Rita Wilson were among the celebrities who participated.

Where to hear live jazz in Kansas City, from 18th & Vine to Waldo

For nearly three decades, Kansas City native Chalis O’Neal has been playing trumpet, performing at jazz venues throughout the metro and contributing to the city’s longstanding musical tradition. From Vine Street Brewing Co. in the historic 18th & Vine Jazz District to Stock Hill and Lonnie’s Reno Club, O’Neal has performed at establishments offering audiences different ways to experience Kansas City’s jazz scene. He also recommends the Blue Room and Ted’s Taproom, which he describes as a newer destination for live jazz, food and drinks. Although Kansas City has a number of established jazz clubs, O’Neal says the music extends well beyond traditional performance venues, with restaurants, breweries and neighborhood bars regularly featuring local musicians. “Kansas City has a great jazz scene,” O’Neal said. “I believe I heard there’s over 50 venues around town, not necessarily jazz clubs, but 50 venues that offer jazz.” Vine Street Brewing Co. On Wednesday evenings, the upstairs taproom at Vine Street Brewing Co. becomes a gathering place for some of Kansas City’s jazz musicians, who come together to improvise, exchange ideas and create music in real time. The weekly jam session, known as “Office Hours,” is led by Kansas City trombonist Marcus Lewis and

Parking, parking, parking Live Nation knows it, visitors know it and Kansas City as a whole knows it: parking will always be an issue no matter where you go. Native American Heritage Month is KC's heritage. Here are 5 ways to learn more

The Kansas City area was once home to multiple tribes of American Indians, and Native American Heritage Month (Nov. 1-30) will offer ample opportunities to honor that history. The Shawnee Indian Mission State Historic Site on the grounds of a 19th-century manual training school for Native American children is the area’s go-to venue for year-round programs and exhibitions. It also is the temporary site for the traveling exhibition “Trespassers Beware!: Fort Conley and Wyandot Women Warriors.” It’s important to note that for several years the Shawnee Indian Mission site has been in the news: first with allegations that Indigenous children who attended the school may have been buried on the grounds, and later, the ownership of the site has been disputed among Native American tribes, including the Shawnee and the Prairie Band Potawatomi Nation. The site and its ownership have been at the center of Kansas Legislation . Also during Native American Heritage Month is a book talk at the Kansas City Public Library-Plaza Branch, and the Indigenous Art Market in Shawnee. If you’re up for a day trip, Missouri's American Indian Cultural Center near Miami might be worth the 90-mile drive. It will be open only on weekends Nov.

A Statue of Liberty in KC? See the other proposed designs for now iconic Liberty Memorial

Even before hostilities ended in Europe, the idea of a memorial dedicated to the soldiers who fought and perished during World War I was a popular one in Kansas City. As early as Nov. 6, 1918, well-known civic booster Joseph Meinrath penned a letter to The Kansas City Journal titled “Kansas City After the War: What Should Be Done Next?” On his laundry list of new civic buildings and public amenities delayed by the war, Meinrath included a new art museum, city hall, public drinking fountains, rest places, and “monuments or memorial halls dedicated to the men who have fought and are fighting the battles of the world for us, with appropriate and ample provisions for the relics of these times, to perpetuate their details and ideals.” The Journal agreed, adding on Nov. 9 that a memorial “must be beautiful and imposing enough not to allow its intrinsic beauty to fall below the cause for which it is meant and to fit into so beautiful a city.” In the weeks after the Nov. 11 Armistice, local business leaders and prominent citizens formed the Liberty Memorial Association to coordinate fundraising and planning. On the question of what form a memorial should

Overland Park city council to vote on reopening historic movie theater

For more than six years, the curtains have been closed at the historic Rio Theatre in downtown Overland Park . The curtains could be raised very soon. Overland Park City Council is set to vote Monday evening, Nov. 2 on a deal that would help restore and reopen the movie theater on 7204 W 80th St. On Oct. 21, the Finance, Administration and Economic Development Committee unanimously directed city council to negotiate a funding agreement with Dream Theatre LLC, the group behind the push to restore and reopen the theater. The remaining $225,000 will be “paid as reimbursement for exterior improvements and building stabilization upon theatre reopening,” according to the staff report. Wyandotte County voters will find something new at the polls on Election Day: DJs

Ben Rich is an electrical engineer by day. On the side he deejays at proms, weddings, concerts, comedy shows, holiday parties, bar mitzvahs and fundraisers around Kansas City. On Election Day, you’ll find him outside two polling places in Wyandotte County, where he lives, playing music for voters — something he’s never done in his 17 years as a DJ. He’ll start the day at 7 a.m. outside Oak Ridge Missionary Baptist Church. He expects long lines. But if some people aren’t planning to vote, he hopes the promise of good music will help draw them. “I know sometimes we can have long lines or people are getting off of work or finding the time of day to get to the polls,” said Rich. “Why not bring a vibe and some music and good tunes to the community and the process while they’re doing that … “It gives me an opportunity to be a part of the community that I was raised in, but also help with voter turnout, to encourage people to be out.” Rich is one of a handful of Kansas City DJs who will play music at WyCo polling places on Tuesday. They are part of a
