Nathanael Dalton won two events May 4 as Carroll County’s boys’ track team won the VA Relays at Virginia High School in Bristol, Va.

Carroll County head coach Shawn Montgomery said the first-place boys’ finish was the program’s first invitational win in many years, though he wasn’t sure exactly how long it had been. Carroll County’s girls also had a big day, finishing second out of 11 teams.

Dalton won both the long jump and triple jump events. The Carroll junior bested 21 finalists in the long jump with a leap of 19-feet, 11.75 inches. The next closest competitor finished more than 21 inches behind Dalton’s winning jump.

Dalton also dominated the triple jump with a total of 39-feet, 10-inches. His total was more than three feet better than the runner-up.

Carroll County junior Brayden Smoot won the 400 meter dash over 19 finalists with a time of 52.32 seconds. Teammate Davis Reitzel topped 24 finalists in the discus with a winning toss of 120-feet, 5-inches.

As a team, Carroll’s boys finished with 101 points to best runner-up Virginia High (92 points). Marion finished third with 80 points, followed by Tazewell (68), Holston (59), Rural Retreat (57), Eastern Montgomery (53), Chilhowie (23), Galax (18) and George Wythe (8).

On the girls’ side of the bracket, both Alexis Montgomery and Corrie Delp won individual events. Montgomery came away with a meet title in the 300 hurdles with a time of 53.59 seconds, while Delp won the long jump with a leap of 16-feet, 5.75-inches. Delp and Montgomery also teamed up with teammates Bristol Delp and Savannah Swecker to win the 4x100 relay with a time of 54.06 seconds.
