Undefeated Georgia high school football team faces GHSA investigation ahead of playoffs

Newton High School's (Covington, GA) undefeated football season could face scrutiny after the Georgia High School Association confirmed it's investigating a report alleging the program used an ineligible player. The GHSA received a report concerning Newton's roster, executive director Tim Scott told the Atlanta Journal-Constitution on Thursday, Nov. 5. However, the association will not complete its investigation or issue a ruling until after the state playoffs conclude, in accordance with GHSA bylaws. Newton enters the final week of the regular season with a 9-0 record, marking the best start in program history. The Rams are one of the top teams in Class 7A. The potential consequences could be significant if the allegations are substantiated. Under GHSA rules, teams found to have used an ineligible player must forfeit every game in which that player participated. That could include postseason contests, depending on the findings of the investigation. The GHSA has forced five football programs to forfeit at least six games over the past decade following eligibility violations. Several of those cases included playoff victories that were subsequently vacated. Scott cautioned against assuming Newton will face disciplinary action, noting that allegations submitted to the association frequently do not result in penalties. For

Football concluded its region competition and declared winners over the weekend and are now gearing up for GHSA-wide competition to start Friday, Nov. 13. Jackson County, Jefferson and Prince Avenue Christian won their region championships. The Panthers captured back-to-back in Region 8-6A over Clarke Central, while the Dragons earned their fifth straight in Region 8-5A over North Oconee and the Wolverines secured the first of the Jon Richt era in Region 8-2A over Commerce. As usual, all rounds will be hosted by the higher seed in each matchup except for the finals. Round one is Friday, Nov. 13, round two Nov. 20, the quarterfinals Nov. 27 and the semifinals Dec. 4. The finals will take place at Mercedes Benz Stadium — located at 1 AMB Drive Northwest in Atlanta — on Dec. 15-16. Providence Christian loses back-and-forth battle with Commerce

LILBURN — With the Georgia high school football playoffs beginning next week, Friday’s game was a crucial game for playoff positioning and momentum. Commerce running back Demarco Huff had a huge night as he ran for over 300 yards as the Tigers (9-1) defeated Providence Academy (6-4) 42-32 in a battle for second place in Region 8-AA. “We were resilient and kept coming back all night but at the end of the day you simply must make plays against a team like that," Providence head coach Trae Owens said. "Tonight Commerce made more plays than us and of course that is why they won the game. We battled back tonight just like we have all season, but we just fell a bit short.” Following a short kickoff return, Providence began from the Storm 21-yard line. After several nice runs by Elliot Lee, the Storm moved out to their own 38-yard line. Shaw beats Monroe to secure Georgia high school football state playoff berth

The Shaw Raiders (5-5, 3-5) are back in the Georgia High School Association football state playoffs for the first time since 2024. They defeated Monroe 12-8 (2-8, 2-5) Thursday night at Kinnett Stadium in Columbus. Monroe got on the scoreboard first on a 77-yard run by sophomore running back Carter Hudson, and they converted on the two-point conversion to go up 8-0. Shaw responded when sophomore quarterback Daylen Peterson scored on a quarterback keeper, but the Raiders failed on their two-point try. After the first quarter, Monroe led Shaw 8-6. In the second quarter, Monroe was driving down the field and was stopped by the Shaw defense at the 8-yard line. Shaw moved the ball to the other side of the field when the Raiders converted on a third-and-18 as Peterson connected with junior wide receiver Marquell Charleston for a 35-yard gain that put the Raiders at first-and-goal. But failed to score as Monroe’s defense made a goal-line stop. Monroe flipped the field and moved the ball to the 50-yard line but was forced to punt. Gwinnett's 15 state playoff football teams learn 1st-round matchups

For the first time ever, the Georgia High School football playoff brackets were determined by PSR, Post Season Rankings. As opposed to the previous format where the top four teams in each region earned automatic playoff bids and matchups were pre-determined by region, the new format takes every team’s winning percentage, opponent’s winning percentage and opponents’ opponents’ winning percentage into account and seeds teams 1-32. Region winners are guaranteed a top-16 seed and a home playoff game in the first round, but other than that PSR was the only consideration used to seed teams. A total of 15 Gwinnett County teams will extend their seasons to state. The state’s top classification, Class AAAAAAA, will have 10 Gwinnett representatives, with one team qualifying out of Class AAAAAA and four Private teams making up the numbers. In Class AAAAAAA, the biggest eye-catcher was Buford ending up at No. 9 despite its 10-0 record and top-three national rankings. The defending state champion Wolves were one of just three undefeated teams in the classification along with Newton and Carrollton, but a very weak region hurt its metrics. Hebron Christian overwhelms Elbert County 69-7 in regular-season finale

DACULA — Hebron Christian's football team wrapped up its regular season on a high note. The reigning state champion Lions took down Elbert County 69-7 for a decisive win ahead of the upcoming Private state playoffs, improving to 4-6 on the season. Elbert falls to 5-5. “Yeah, it was great,” Hebron interim head coach Daniel Mejia said of the win. “Amidst all the adversity that we faced in this community, we really stayed together. LAWRENCEVILLE — Collins Hill senior quarterback Makyree Cross threw five touchdown passes for a second straight week as the Eagles defeated Discovery 56-6 in high school football on Friday. This win puts the Eagles at 5-5 overall, including a 5-1 record in Region 8-AAAAAAA. The Eagles came into the matchup looking to end their regular season on a three-game winning streak while keeping their postseason hopes alive.
