BINGHAMTON, NY (WIVT/WBGH) – Members of the Binghamton Police Department were surrounded by friends and family as they were presented with awards for protecting our community.

The annual Binghamton Police Awards ceremony was held this afternoon at the Mayor’s office in Binghamton City Hall.

Throughout the ceremony, Police Chief Joe Zikuski recounted the officers’ heroic actions by reading the police reports.

One awarded officer saved a man drowning in the river, while another cleared the windpipe of an infant and saved their life.

The Mayor, Jared Kraham says officers generally aren’t looking for recognition, so the awards ceremony is a good excuse to praise them.

Binghamton Mayor Jared Kraham says, “We should also recognize that today’s awards are what we can share publicly. That, for every public recognition our officers get, there are many more investigations, operations, and arrests that go unnoticed. Yet, our officers still dedicate their lives to the mission of public safety. Knowing full well that their contributions may never be noticed.”

Each officer received a certificate of recognition, that includes a description of the call that they responded to.

Zikuski says there are countless other incidents that deserve recognition but cannot be shared publicly.
