Vail Whitewater Race Series set to kick off on May 7
The 2024 Vail Whitewater Race Series returns on May 7, which can only mean one thing: Tuesday nights belong to the river rats once again. “I do consider myself a river rat,” said Vail Recreation District’s (VRD) new sports coordinator Wyatt Smith, who runs both the summer whitewater and trail run race series.
Vail cyclist is back from a crash injury and revving up for the 2024 race season
Bayli McSpadden knows she’s playing the long game when it comes to realizing her cycling potential, but that doesn’t make dealing with injury any easier. The Vail-raised, CU Boulder sophomore suffered a trimalleolar fracture after crashing in a collegiate mountain bike race last October. Instead of cashing in on her hard-earned physiological investments at the season-ending collegiate national championships the following week, she was sidelined for the next two months.
Long: Why the LG Tri?
I grew up here in the Vail Valley and, after about six years living in New York City, I moved back to Colorado in 2021 and am happy to call it my forever home. I’ve been a participant in the LG Tri about five times now and believe me when I tell you how special this event is. The team at Vail Valley Charitable Fund does an unbelievable job putting on this event every year and the volunteer participation in the event always makes me so proud to be a member of this amazing community.

No. 3 Steamboat Springs defeated No. 4 Battle Mountain 6-5 on Friday in Edwards in a matchup of two of the state’s top boys lacrosse teams. Keelan Losa led the Huskies with two goals and an assist in the loss. Carter Shonk, Garrett Ast and Jack Pryor also scored for Battle Mountain, which fell to 12-2. The Huskies close out the regular season against Glenwood Springs at home on Saturday.

Eagle County Board of Commissioners names Beth Oliver the new county attorney
The Eagle County Board of Commissioners Tuesday named Beth Oliver as county attorney today. Oliver was working as the interim county attorney and has 29 years of combined private practice and local government experience. She joined the county in 2012 as assistant county attorney and has served as deputy county attorney since 2016.

For the third-straight year, the Vail Christian tennis team is sending its entire lineup to the Colorado 3A individual state tournament. “I am so proud of our girls,” head coach J.D. Webster stated. “They won four state championships last year and all 11 players are going to state again this year. We are in the semis as a team. Eagle Valley High School student dies after stabbing incident
GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. (KKCO) - An Eagle Valley High School Student died Wednesday after an incident in Gypsum Park. The Eagle County Sheriffs Office confirmed that the High School Student died after being stabbed multiple times at the park. Deputies responded to the disturbance at 2nd Street Park around 10 p.m. Wednesday. Upon arrival, the teen was found with serious injuries and was transported to the hospital where they died due to the extent of their injuries. After an investigation a suspect was taken into custody.
Cowboy poetry event will harken back to Eagle County’s roots
The Eagle County Historical Society is hosting a night of cowboy poetry and music on May 11 at 4 Eagle Ranch, calling back to Eagle County’s roots. Cowboy poetry arises out of the Western tradition of long-distance cattle drives in the 19th century, when cowboys would spend significant periods of time battling the elements, separated from other people, in the company of their horses and cattle. The genre persists today, with modern-day cowboy poets reflecting on similar themes.

Highway 24 reopens following vehicle fire
U.S. Highway 24 was briefly closed in both directions south of Minturn for a vehicle fire according to an Eagle County Alert that came in just before noon on Monday, April 29. The road was reopened around 12:15 p.m., according to another alert, but drivers were warned that there is still construction in the area.
