Albemarle County Proposed Sales Tax Hike Is Yet Another Bloated Bureaucratic Blunder

One key provision to watch as Albemarle County residents head to the polls this Tuesday is the proposed sales tax hike. The county wants to increase the sales tax by one percentage point, pushing the total sales tax rate, combining both local and state, to 6.3%. While an increase from the current 5.3% combined sales tax to 6.3% may seem futile to many administrators in Albemarle, it represents yet another opportunity for a failing bureaucracy to justify taking more of the constituency’s money to bail them out of bad policymaking.

Salmonella shut down a small Virginia estuary to shellfish harvesting, but all oyster farmers are feeling the pain

On May 18th, Virginia’s own Dominion Energy and Florida-based NextEra Energy announced their intention to merge. The proposed $67 billion deal between the two utility providers would be a defining moment in Virginia’s economic transformation and change the scope of the Commonwealth’s capacity for future development. If approved, the deal will create the largest regulated utility company in the world, fundamentally altering who controls the power flowing into Virginia homes and businesses, and bringing market interconnectivity to Virginia at an unprecedented scale.

Most localities with the school sales tax ballot initiative... rejected it

Some voters in Virginia approved of increasing their local sales tax to finance school construction. But... most jurisdictions rejected the ballot initiative. But they were in the minority. Most jurisdictions that had the school construction tax referendum on the ballot rejected it. Wes Bellamy at Virginia State University says there's one obvious difference between the localities that approved and the ones that rejected.
