Bangor Public Works crews are nearly finished installing a large patch of cobblestones in front of Stephen King’s house on West Broadway. The roughly $6,000 project launched on May 1 and will likely wrap up before the end of the month, according to David Warren, spokesperson for the city.
The swath of cobblestones will replace what was once a grass patch between the sidewalk and the street. However, years of tourists visiting the author’s house trampled the grass, turning it into an unsightly dirt patch. “It’s arguably the most visited spot in the city, so we had to do something to address the dirt patch that had formed,” Warren said. “We wanted something that’s a bit more resilient, and cobblestones are a little more attractive than some other options.” The funding for the project comes from the Public Works Department’s budget for annual maintenance work, according to Warren.
