Cowboys fall to North Bend in playoff baseball
It was not the end to the season that the Crook County High School baseball team had hoped for. Playing in raining conditions that would have canceled regular season games, Crook County pitchers struggled with control, walking 18 batters as North Bend rolled to a 14-3 win in the first round of the OSAA Class 4A state playoffs. “I hate to blame the elements, but it was difficult out there,”...
Bandon’s Quilting Legacy highlighted at Bandon Historical Society Museum
Tucked away within the cherished rooms of the Bandon Historical Society Museum lies a treasure trove of early 20th-century quilts, elegantly showcased as part of the community's rich visual heritage. America's quilting tradition is a fascinating blend of practical domestic craftsmanship and artistic expression, highlighting the ingenuity of individual creators shared across cultures. As writer Beth Gutcheon eloquently stated in 1975, "a woman made utility quilts as fast as she could so her family wouldn’t freeze, and she made them as beautiful as she could so her heart wouldn’t break." Settler families, particularly women and young girls, painstakingly stitched quilts...

Padgett, Lutes rewrite record book at state
The Class 4A state meet had a lot of relay drama, a lot of familiar success by pole vaulters and sprinters Jason Padgett and Bodey Lutes, and ultimately second-place trophies for Marshfield’s boys and North Bend’s girls. The two-day event ended with the local teams smiling, even though Saturday started with heartbreak for different reasons for the 4x100 relay teams from Marshfield and North Bend. An anticipated showdown on the...
Guest Column: An elemental matter
What if I were to tell you that bringing a criminal matter before the court is akin to a matter of chemistry? In order for the Coos County Sheriff’s Office to make a case, we must establish that a crime did, in fact occur. In order to do that, we must meet the element of the crime as set forth in Oregon Revised Statute. Only if the elements come together can we make an arrest, or refer a matter to the Coos County District Attorney’s Office with a referral for prosecution. ...
SWOCC softball, baseball teams see season end
The Southwestern Oregon Community College softball team was unable to repeat as NWAC champions, though the Lakers nearly worked their way into contention after an early loss in the tournament. SWOCC, the No. 3 seed, beat Chemeketa 10-2 to open the tournament, but fell to Wenatchee Valley 8-4 in its second game. That put the Lakers into must-win mode, and SWOCC did that for most of the second day, edging...
