North Bend High Symphonic Band wins Championship
The North Bend High School Symphonic Band won the 2024 State 4A Championship at the LaSalle performing arts center on the Oregon State University campus, Thursday evening, May 9th. The 51-member band is conducted by Amber Yester. They scored 312 points to earn first place for the second consecutive year, and their sixth state championship since 2014. The band performed AYO by Katana Copley, Tha MI Sgith by Brian Beck, Song for Lindsay by Andrew Boysen Jr., and Havana Nights by Randall Standridge. Gladstone High School took second place and Scappoose High School finished in third place.
North Bend’s Farm wins district tennis title
North Bend and Marshfield will each be represented at the state tennis tournament this week. The tprnament is Thursday through Saturday in Corvallis. Coos Bay Wins Federal Grant for Marshfield Pioneer Cemetery, Seeks Public Input on Restoration Plans
Coos Bay residents are being given a voice in how a slice of federal money will spruce up their local historical site. The city has netted a $16,500 federal grant targeting the restoration of the Marshfield Pioneer Cemetery, an announcement from the Oregon State Historic Preservation Office confirmed. Officials specified that the grant, sourced from the federal Historic Preservation Fund, will go towards the repair and leveling of markers—a move aimed at preserving the fidelity of the local history embedded within the cemetery's storied grounds.
May South Coast Chess Tournament held
A South Coast Chess Tournament to end the school year was held at the Coquille High School Library last weekend.The Coquille Chess tournaments are not just for Coquille as it has become more diverse with players coming from Sutherlin and Myrtle Creek as well as Coos Bay, North Bend, Myrtle Point and Port Orford. Several adults continue to challenge the scholastic players. Winners of the May tournament were:Advanced: first place Misha von Dassow (Coos Bay), second place Randy Smolensky (Myrtle Creek), third place Jordan Florez (Coquille).Intermediate: First place tied between Matthew Bottoroff (Myrtle Point) and Jaxon Williams (Myrtle Creek), third place Skyler White-Ross (Port Orford)Novice: First place Ruckus Hughes (North Bend), second place Malichai Florez (Coquille), third place: Bradly Oneslager (Myrtle Creek) Summer chess tournaments are planned to be played in the parks of Bandon and Coquille with badminton, squirt guns and other outdoor fun can be played between rounds. Crash on McCullough Bridge in Coos Bay affects all lanes, delays expected
The Oregon Department of Transportation (ODOT) is reporting a crash has occurred on U.S. Highway 101, at milepost 234, on the McCullough Bridge in Coos Bay. All lanes are affected, ODOT is asking drivers to prepare to slow or move over for worker safety. There is an estimated delay of 20 minutes or less.

High-speed crash in North Bend nearly causes citywide blackout
COOS BAY, Ore. — A two-vehicle crash in North Bend almost knocked out power to part of the city. The North Bend Police Department says 35-year-old Philip Parsons of Coos Bay was driving in excess of 100 miles an hour in his grey 2006 BMW when he crashed into a Honda Pilot, and then into a power pole.
