Fairfield County streamlines property tax exemption help

The Fairfield County Auditor’s Office has assigned two staff members to oversee local administration of Ohio’s property tax exemption program, creating designated points of contact for property owners seeking assistance, according to a community announcement. The office said Appraisal Assistants Makala Finley and Crystal Walker will handle local applications and processing related to the state tax exemption program. The assignment is intended to make it easier for residents to get help and receive answers about the application process. While the Ohio Department of Taxation determines eligibility and makes final decisions on tax exemption requests, the Fairfield County Auditor’s Office manages applications and local administrative responsibilities. “Our goal is to make the process as clear and accessible as possible for Fairfield County property owners,” Fairfield County Auditor Carri Brown said. “By assigning Makala and Crystal specifically to this work, we can provide more consistent service and make it easier for residents to know exactly where to go when they have questions.” The updated structure is designed to streamline service within the auditor’s office and direct questions about the state tax exemption program to employees assigned specifically to assist with the local process. Gas companies profit, Ohioans bemoan lack of jobs

Residents in eight Ohio counties believe big business is giving them the shaft. Belmont, Carroll, Columbiana, Guernsey, Harrison, Jefferson, Monroe and Noble County citizens said a promise of more jobs in fracking is not being met. Fracking drills water, sand and a chemical mix into cracked rock formations to release trapped oil or natural gas to produce shale gas. Sean O'Leary, senior researcher at the Ohio River Valley Institute, said there's been great interest in gas deposits in northeast Ohio since the 2000s. "Many political leaders, certainly business leaders, saw the development of what would eventually become the richest natural gas field in the world would be a driver of economic development in the region," O’Leary explained. Generating natural gas produces substantial revenue , O'Leary noted, and since 2006, microseismic technology has advanced shale gas production while the need for workers has declined. A 2023 economic impact study by the American Petroleum Institute suggested 50,000 industry jobs would be created in Ohio. The absence of reinvestment in communities hosting fracking operations is considered troubling by industry experts, especially amid a weakening job market.
