Aurora HS grad and KSU pre-med student has 'had quite the journey'
Considering the medical issues she has faced over the last few years, Cassidy Trem could be forgiven for wanting to take it easy. Instead, the Aurora High School graduate, when she isn't engaged in her premed studies at Kent State University, is running marathons. "I have had quite the journey," said Trem. After a long recovery from a serious traffic accident, she ran the Nationwide Children’s Hospital Columbus Marathon while a high school senior in October 2023. And just a couple of months after undergoing the last of three surgeries for a medical condition unrelated to the crash, she ran the Barcelona Marathon in Spain this past March. And to top it off, Trem is preparing to run in the Indianapolis Monumental Marathon on Nov. 7 after recovering from a recent outpatient procedure related to that condition. Trem says that she is determined to fight through her various issues, but admits that at times she has wondered about her various trials. "I just can't believe these things keep happening to me," she said. In connection with the Indianapolis marathon, Trem is fundraising for Ketchup to Cancer , a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization founded in 2025 by Alex Baker, who began running

Ohio high school football playoff win erased after unusual ineligible-player scheme
An unusual situation in Ohio has led to one high school football program having to forfeit its opening playoff win and the losing team getting another opportunity in the postseason. According to a report from Josh Weir of The Canton Repository — part of the USA TODAY Network — Liberty (Youngstown, OH) has been removed from the playoffs after the team used an ineligible player in the team's 26-16 opening round win over Canton Central Catholic. 19News received further information, learning that the disqualification stems from an ineligible player swapping jerseys with an eligible player and playing in the game. The report noted that Canton Central Catholic head coach Jeff Lindesmith was told that a fan of Liberty informed a Canton Central Catholic staff member of the swap. Liberty's athletic director Todd Smith was informed of the situation by that staff member shortly after. Smith later reported the situation to the OHSAA, leading to Liberty's disqualification. The Panthers entered the game with a 10-1 record and with the win, had advanced to a highly-anticipated second-round meeting with unbeaten Perry (OH). Now they'll have to look towards the 2027 season. Meanwhile, Canton Central Catholic (7-4) now gets a new life in

Akron Garfield boys head basketball coach McNeal Thompson III steps down
McNeal "Coach Mac" Thompson III (Photo: Provided) AKRON, Ohio — According to the team’s Facebook page, Akron Garfield will seek a new head boys’ basketball coach after McNeal Thompson III stepped down following six seasons. When Thompson III was hired, the school was known as Kenmore-Garfield; following a 2016 merger, it was renamed Akron Garfield Community Learning Center. He departs the program in good standing after a 0–16 debut season in 2020. He went on to build the team into a contender, guiding it to its first district berth in 2024 and its first Akron City Series title in 2026 with a victory over crosstown rival Akron Ellet, the first in 25 years. He is a 1999 graduate of Kenmore High School and was also inducted into the King of Court Hall of Fame this past August. "Coach Mac, thank you for your leadership and sacrifices you made to pour into our boys and the community," It said in the Facebook post. "Garfield is better because you were here. You will be missed." An email was sent to APS for comment, as no successor has been named at the time of publication.

Garfield football vs Conneaut High School, live score updates
GARRETTSVILLE — The best ground games seamlessly pair great running backs with a stout line. After Ryder Cain tied a program single-game record with six touchdowns in Garfield's 48-14 regional quarterfinal win over Conneaut, the current connection in Garrettsville is hard to argue. "Ryder, he's always been the first guy every time thanking his line after every touchdown on the sidelines," G-Men senior lineman Gavin Barnard said. "He is my best friend. I mean we spend every weekend together. We're always out hunting, fishing together. I know that dude like my own brother and I just know how hard he worked and he deserves every bit of it." Sure enough, Cain — when asked about his 23 carries for 248 yards and six touchdowns — quickly brought up his linemen. "It feels great, but I got to give all the credit to the line," Cain said. "They do it all." Watch Ohio High School Football Live on NFHS Network all year Garfield (11-0) never trailed after scoring on its first two drives.
