Downtown Cincinnati's Terrace Plaza Hotel Tax Fight Threatens $101M Revamp
A legal fight over how much Cincinnati's vacant Terrace Plaza Hotel is actually worth has landed in the Hamilton County Appellate Court, and the outcome could determine whether the downtown landmark gets a long-promised second life or stays frozen in limbo. Developer Tony Birkla argues the tower is essentially worthless, while county officials have assessed it in the millions, a gap that now threatens to upend financing for a proposed redevelopment that could run into the hundreds of millions of dollars.

Madisonville’s renewal has been decades in the making
At the intersection of Madison Road and Whetsel Avenue, new mixed-use buildings occupy two corners in the heart of Madisonville. On the northeast corner, a remnant of the neighborhood’s historic past remains: a grand entrance to a facade with “The Fifth and Third Bank” etched in stone above the door. It reflects what Madisonville’s business district has become, a merging of old and new. What visitors see today represents decades of work.
