Thousands of gallons of untreated sewer water spills after pipe ruptures near Keizer park

SALEM, Ore. (KATU) — Cleanup crews responded to a park in Salem on Wednesday after thousands of gallons of untreated sewer water spilled from a ruptured pipe. The spill happened near Keizer Rapids Park around noon. According to Salem city officials, crews were performing routine maintenance “to identify potential problem areas” when an investigative device got stuck in an 18-inch sewer line south of the Willow Lake Wastewater Pollution Control Facility.

The Mid-Valley saw a number of competitive races for the Oregon House and Senate in the Nov. 3 election. Incumbents like Sen. Deb Patterson, D-Salem , Sen. Sara Gelser Blouin, D-Corvallis , and Rep. Tom Andersen, D-Salem , had strong election night leads. Elsewhere, Democrat Virginia Stapleton had a lead over Republican Tracy Cramer in the race for Oregon Senate District 11, while Rep. Kevin Mannix, R-Salem, was trailing Democratic challenger Michael Welsh in Oregon House District 21 and incumbent Rep. Portland man loses half of his foot after salon pedicure, sues for $900K

A 40-year-old Portland man says he lost half of his foot after it became infected from unsterilized tools used during a pedicure he received at a local nail salon. Nathan Fields has filed a $913,000 lawsuit against Eden Salon & Spa, claiming that a nail technician “severely cut” his big toe during the March 2025 pedicure and that ultimately led to two amputations that carved away all of his toes and much of his foot.

When you can expect to see more Marion, Polk County election results

Election night is over , but ballot counting is still going on in full force in county clerk offices. Polk County’s next scheduled to release results from the election by 5 p.m. on Nov. 4, according to the county's election schedule. Marion County’s next scheduled release of results is by 5 p.m. on Nov. 5, according to that county's schedule. Marion County’s most recent results, which were released at 1 a.m. on Nov. 4, tallied 74,905 ballots of the 142,002 cast in the election. That compares with 135,872 ballots cast in 2022 and 159,097 in 2024. That means close races, such as the Marion County Commissioner Position 1 race between Kevin Cameron and Sara Duncan and the Position 2 race between Colm Willis and Maria Hinojos Pressey are far from decided. The races are separated by fewer than 1,000 votes in the most recently released results. In Polk County, there were 38,457 ballots cast and 32,810 had been counted as of 8 p.m. on Nov. 3. Polk County is scheduled to release more election results on Nov. 10, 18 and 25. Marion County is scheduled to release more results Nov. 11, 18 and 25. The final results in both counties

Marion, Polk voters largely approving new fees, taxes in 2026 election

Voters in Marion and Polk counties seemed to show they are willing to pay more by approving all of the levies, bonds and fees put to them by local governments , based on early returns in the Nov. 3 election. Measures in Polk County, Independence, Silverton, Stayton, Gates and Mt. Angel, all of which will cost residents money, are so far being approved in early results. The Polk County Fairgrounds operations levy will charge property owners 12 cents per $1,000 of assessed value to pay for operations of the fairgrounds in Rickreall. The levy is expected to raise $5.4 million over five years. Polk County officials said the fairgrounds would close if the levy failed. The $87 million Silver Falls School District school bond would pay to replace the Silverton Middle School building and new K-8 school in the west side of the district to replace three aging K-8 schools. The bond will charge property owners $1.88 per $1,000 of assessed value starting in 2027, which is when the current bond at the same rate is expiring. In Independence, voters are approving $19.65 in fees to fund operations of the city’s parks, library and museum. The fees, which include an
