Ashland school board won't appeal ruling that it broke open records law
The Ashland School Board will not appeal a judge’s ruling that the district violated Wisconsin’s Open Records Law when it withheld an attorney’s report that led to the 2024 censure of board member Kelly Maday. Board members also voted Sept. 14 to release a redacted version of the report, prepared by the judge, to themselves and to Kate Ullman, the Ashland resident who sued the district to obtain it. Under the court’s order, the report is expected to be released by mid-October. Ullman, an educator, filed the lawsuit as a private citizen before she was elected to the school board. The suit alleged the board violated the Open Records Law by refusing to release the report, which stemmed from a complaint brought by then-board President Jeffrey Moravchik. The report, issued June 7, 2024, was never provided to Maday or to other board members, although portions were read to board members before they voted to censure her. On Aug. 30, 2024, Ullman filed an open records request with Superintendent Robert Prater seeking the report. That request, like an earlier one from Maday, was denied. Ullman sued on Jan. 2, 2025. Maday said she was glad the lawsuit will bring the report

Bruce edges Washburn 54-52 in fourth-quarter shootout
After three grind-it-out quarters of stingy defense, the Washburn Castle Guards and the visiting Bruce Red Raiders lit up the field with a fourth-quarter scoring burst, and Bruce came away with a 54-52 win on Sept. 17 at Washburn High School Field. Washburn coach Adam Coykendall said he expected a close game regardless of the final score. “We (thought) a lot of points would be needed,” he said. “In the first half, we were behind the sticks due to penalties, which really limited our success. But our run game wore down Bruce in the second half with some big plays. That allowed for some big pass plays over the top of their packed box playing the run.” In the end, the Red Raiders put the game away on a late 2-point conversion. Coykendall said it was a tough blow for a team long on talent and short on experience. He said Bruce sophomore quarterback Blake Nyhagen was the difference. “Unfortunately, while we did a pretty good job of stopping their pass game,” he said, “their quarterback was tough to stop in the run game. They adjusted their offense to simply run through him.” With the defeat, Bruce, Washburn, and the
