Franklin High football's MIAA playoff hopes dashed by Andover
The Franklin football team found itself in a spot it's in every year on Thursday night, November 5. The Panthers were back in the MIAA Division 1 state playoffs, a trip they have made each full season since 2019. Yet, for the fourth straight fall, the Panthers couldn't get over the first-round hump, as the eighth-seeded Panthers couldn't hold off hard-charging No. 9-seed Andover in a 56-21 victory for the visitors. It marked the third time since 2019 that Andover had defeated Franklin in the postseason. More: MetroWest high school football schedule/live scores (Nov. 5-7) Among the bright spots for the host Panthers (6-3) was sophomore quarterback Ethan Edmunds, who was 34-for-51 passing for 270 yards and three touchdowns in addition to 68 yards rushing. Additionally, Ben Scullin had eight catches for 65 yards and two TDs for Franklin, while Iyad Fraifer had nine catches for 102 yards and a TD. Christian Holmes added 13 catches for 86 yards for the Panthers. For Andover, senior Marcus DeJesus ran for four touchdowns and caught another in the convincing victory. One game, $300: School Commitee takes up activities fee complaints
Marblehead school officials are taking a closer look at the district’s $300 extracurricular activities fee following complaints from parents, including families whose children participate in just one event. Meanwhile, Superintendent John Robidoux is recommending that the district give up control of the former Eveleth School, citing costly repairs and little foreseeable need for the building.

N.H. volleyball: Oyster River survives Hollis-Brookline, advances to DII championship
DERRY – The Oyster River High School volleyball team got all it could handle from upset-minded Hollis-Brookline in Wednesday night’s Division II semifinals, but the Bobcats held on for a hard-fought 3-1 win to set up a championship match against rival Somersworth. For the second straight year, second-seeded Oyster River (17-2) and top-seeded Somersworth (18-1) will face off in the Division II championship. This year, the teams will meet at noon on Saturday, Nov. 7 at Pinkerton Academy. Oyster River, the defending state champions, handed Somersworth its only loss of the season, 3-1, on Oct. 16. Maggie DeWire delivered in a pressure-packed moment in the deciding fourth set. Making her first serves of the season, DeWire helped bring the Bobcats back from a 23-19 deficit to a 24-23 lead. Oyster River went on to win the set, 26-24, to close out the match. “That is the first time Maggie has served in a game this season,” Oyster River head coach Cassie Doore said. “She rattled off (four) points, and she played some defense back there too, which we don’t normally ask of her. Playoff Bound Haverhill Hillies to Play Leominster High School in Playoff Opener
Haverhill High School Hillies football plays Leominster High School to open the playoffs on the road Friday night. The Hillies, ranked number 10 in the Massachusetts Interscholastic Athletic Association Division I, are playing in the state tournament for the first time in 10 seasons. Haverhill’s record matches that of Leominster, ranked seventh, at 5-3.

UNH students, faculty oppose potential removal of up to 300k books from library
Justin Kostopulos is not a traditional art history student at UNH. He’s 35 and a commuter, so he spends a lot of his time between classes wandering the stacks of the library. When he found out the Dimond Library was reviewing nearly 300,000 print titles for potential removal, he started a petition to ask the university to reconsider. Within a week, it gathered over 600 signatures.
