Traffic detours on Goldsboro Street will continue while the city of Wilson replaces and realigns storm, sewer and water pipes in preparation for the new downtown baseball stadium.

Johnnie Jack Webb, construction inspector in engineering in city’s Department of Public Works, said a 48-inch reinforced concrete stormwater pipe, a 12-inch C900 PVC water pipe and a 12-inch ductile iron sewer pipe are being replaced on Goldsboro Street between Hines and Spruce streets.

Contractor Moffat Pipe Inc. of Wake Forest has the $3 million contract to replace the piping for the city.

Webb said work will be complete on Goldsboro Street west of Hines Street in about one to two weeks. The crew will undertake a similar project up Goldsboro Street on the east side of Hines Street.

The work will go all the way to the southwest side of the Vollis Simpson Whirligig Park near the freestanding restroom facilities and will be tied into existing pipework on Douglas Street.

Webb said drivers in the area should expect detours around the work through the beginning of summer.

There will also be some lane closures on Hines Street as the pipes are installed across that street.

“Hines will never be completely shut down. It will be temporary lane closures,” Webb said.

The city is working with the N.C. Department of Transportation because it is a state-maintained road.

“We will shift the lanes to the inside in conjunction with the DOT,” Webb said. “It will be about a seven-day period there for 24 hours to get everything across Hines, but traffic will still be flowing.”

Webb said all the work should be complete sometime in July.

A portion of Douglas Street from the Whirligig Park to Hines Street will be permanently shut down because it’s within the footprint of the new stadium.
