    Edible adventures: Pick your own berries and more at these Wilmington-area farms

    Looking for a way to soak up the sun as the weather begins to warm? You're in luck.

    Residents across the Cape Fear region have the opportunity to pick their own fresh produce, berries, and flowers at these five locations. With most local growing seasons beginning around May or June, here's where you can plan your pick-your-own visit for the near future.

    Lewis Nursery and Farms, Inc.

    Location: 6517 Gordon Road, Wilmington

    Hours: Monday-Saturday from 9 a.m. until 6 p.m., Sunday from 1 p.m. until 5 p.m.

    Lewis Nursery and Farms offers pick your own strawberries, blueberries, and blackberries, according to its webpage . Spring strawberry season begins in April and continues into May, blueberry season runs from May through July, and blackberry season begins in May and continues into October.

    In addition, customers can browse a variety of bedding plants, hanging baskets, and more. The Gordon Road location of Lewis Farms is also known for its homemade ice cream, poundcake and other sweet treats.

    Trask Family Farms

    Location: 3650 Blue Clay Road, Castle Hayne

    Hours: Varying by season

    Trask Family Farms offers "you-pick-it tomatoes, fall and summer mazes, local and homemade treats, regional goods, and plenty of opportunities for photo ops," according to its webpage . In addition, customers can look forward to watermelon and cantaloupe sorbet available for purchase.

    Visitors can pick flowers, venture through sunflower mazes, and shop at the farm's produce stand. More information about visiting hours and in-season produce can be found on the Trask Family Farm Instagram .

    Carol Sue Blueberry Farms

    Location: 19874 U.S. 17, Hampstead

    Hours: Monday-Friday from 10 a.m. until 6 p.m., Saturday from 10 a.m. until 5 p.m., Sunday from 12:30 p.m. until 4 p.m.

    Carol Sue Blueberry Farms offers pick-your-own strawberries and blueberries, according to its webpage . This Hampstead location also offers pre-picked berries for purchase in pint-size or flats. The Carol Sue Blueberry Farms' webpage offers instructions on how to properly pick and store fresh berries.

    As a plus, customers can look forward to strawberry and blueberry ice cream.

    Owen's Blueberries

    Location: 1789 Southport-Supply Road S.E., Bolivia.

    Hours: Varying. Live schedule can be found on the company webpage.

    As of February 2024, Owen's Blueberries expected to kick off their season around June first this year. Once the season starts, Owen's will offer scheduled dates and times for you-pick blueberries approximately one to two times per week throughout the season.

    The farm began in the mid 1980s and now Owen's Blueberries produces around 13 varieties with one-and-a-half acres in production, according to its webpage. The you-pick price runs at $1.85 per pound with the season concluding around July 30.

    Indigo Farms Market

    Location: 1542 Hickman Road N.W., Calabash.

    Hours: Saturday from 9 a.m. until noon. Subject to change.

    Indigo Farms Market offers pre-picked berries at their on-farm market in Calabash. Indigo Farms recently announced that pick-your-own strawberries will become available in the future dependent upon berry ripeness, according to its Facebook page .

    Customers should plan to bring their own containers to pick berries, priced at $4.50 per pound.
