The latest nominations for the StarNews Student of the Week are in, and now it's time for you to pick the best of the best.

Participating high school principals, teachers and guidance counselors in New Hanover, Brunswick, and Pender counties nominated students they say have shown outstanding academic achievement and made a difference in their schools and communities.

We will announce a winner on Friday, May 3.

To cast a vote, visit the poll at the bottom of this nominees list.

The nominees for the week of April 29 are:

Anna Kate Chance, Hoggard High School

Drew Pate, assistant principal, nominated Anna Kate Chance, a sophomore, calling her “an exemplary student and remarkable individual overall.” “Her dedication to her studies, active class participation, kindness toward her peers, and involvement in extracurricular activities and sports showcase her well-rounded character and admirable work ethic,” Pate wrote. “It's truly inspiring how she maintains a positive attitude no matter the obstacles that come her way.”

Sara Hatcher, Wilmington Early College High School

Principal Regina Wooten nominated Sara Hatcher, a sophomore at Wilmington Early College High School. Wooten said Hatcher has “an abundance of energy and is always uplifting her peers.” Hatcher joined Future Business Leaders of America and participated in a cheer competition at the regional level. She placed first and participated in the state competition where she placed third. Wooten said Hatcher will continue her journey at the national competition.

Betul Karabacak, Isaac Bear Early College High School

Principal Ronald Villines Jr. nominated Betul Karabacak for being “consistently amazing all year.” “Betul is not only well-rounded and strong academically, but she is always ready to help a peer in need,” Villines wrote. “Betul is incredibly compassionate and thoughtful, and wonderfully astute.” He added that she volunteers in the community and also works on archaeological digs in Wilmington. “We hope we get more Bearhawks like Betul Karabacak in the future,” Villines concluded.

Samuel Molina Machado, West Brunswick High School

Samuel Molina Machado was nominated by teacher Melissa Dean who said he is “extremely kind and respectful.” Dean noted Machado is “a very hard worker and will always help a friend in need.” “Samuel is an upstanding citizen, and he does the right thing,” she wrote. “He is very mannerly and could not be a nicer student.” She added that Machado is “a pleasure to teach” and “shows concern for his teacher and classmates” by using his manners and being thoughtful. “Samuel is a great kid,” she concluded.

    MaKayla Seltzer, SEA-Tech High School

Heather Appleton, school counselor, nominated MaKayla Seltzer who is dual enrolled at SEA-Tech and Cape Fear Community College where she is the vice-president of dual enrollment through Phi Theta Kappa (PTK). As vice-president, Seltzer encourages dual enrolled students in New Hanover and Pender counties to become invested and engaged within the international honor society. In addition, Seltzer is also enrolled in a program through UNC Wilmington called CCURE. “This program allows students at CFCC to learn and conduct professional research at UNCW, giving them experience in university research that they would not otherwise receive,” Appleton wrote in the nomination. “Currently, she is researching what happened to the properties that were owned by people who were banished or killed during the 1898 Wilmington Massacre.” Appleton concluded by saying Seltzer “goes above and beyond” and the faculty and staff at SEA-Tech is proud of her and all she has accomplished. “We know that she will continue to do great things,” Appleton wrote.
