Orange barrels are a symbol of ongoing construction projects and roadwork, and Wilmington residents say they’ve become a fixture at the intersection of Market Street and Military Cutoff Extension.

Residents have reached out to the StarNews recently asking when this project will be completed, when the orange barrels will be removed, and when the lanes of traffic will open.

According to Lauren Haviland, spokeswoman for the N.C. Department of the Transportation (NCDOT), crews are expected to finish paving later this spring but did not provide an exact timeline.

What additional upgrades are planned in this area?

Haviland said NCDOT Project U-6202 will widen Gordon Road to a four-lane median-divided road from Market Street to I-40. In addition to the widened roadway, the project will also include a 10-foot multi-use path on the north side of Gordon Road and a 5-foot sidewalk on the south side, which will run the length of the project.

Right-of-way acquisition began in 2022, and construction is expected to begin this year on the $46.8 million project. Haviland said contract dates have not been set, but it is expected to be a multi-year project.

Why is the project needed?

According to NCDOT documents, the purpose of the project is “improve capacity and reduce traffic congestion along Gordon Road.” It also states it is “intended to aid in managing the population growth that the Wilmington area has been experiencing over the past few years.”
