Welcome to the weekly Port City Life newsletter brought to you by me, StarNews reporter John Staton.

Every Thursday, I try to bring you a representative cross-sample of the goings on in the Wilmington area, from fun events and good reads to stories that tell us a little bit about what it's like to live and work in Southeastern North Carolina.

I don't think I'll ever be able to bring you a fully comprehensive look at all of the events and happenings in our area; there's just too much going on. But we will for sure hit the highlights. Speaking of which …

    Weekend weather outlook

Not to jinx it, but the weather's looking pretty promising this weekend: party cloudy to mostly sunny, with highs in the mid-70s, lows around 60 and a very slight chance of rain. Fingers crossed!

    Go | See | Do

It is truly an action-packed weekend in Wilmington, with a near-incredible mix of theater, local music, touring concerts, film, visual art and more.

There are five plays on local stages for starters (and that's not even counting youth shows), including Big Dawg Productions' moving "Windows," a collection of eight eight mono- and duologues that looks back at the year of the pandemic lockdown. Plus, the Cameron Art Museum opens a new exhibit of large-scale installation pieces by Thomas Sayre and touring dance/comedy troupe Les Ballets Trockadero de Monte Carlo comes to UNCW.

The Dish with Port City Foodies

New owners have vowed to preserve the legacy of a Carolina Beach Road food stand that dates to 1966. Food writer Allison Ballard has the story.

Plus, a restaurant in the Mayfaire shopping center announces its closure, while a couple of area bartenders have launched a pop-up barbecue business.

    Getting to know Orton Plantation

It's been closed to visitors for more than a decade now. But Orton Plantation in Brunswick County has a history that predates Wilmington, and has a plantation house, parts of which are nearly 300 years old. Read more about Orton's long and fabled history.

    News you can use

A horror movie starring the actor Russell Crowe that shot in Wilmington way back in 2019 is finally getting released. Find out when you can see "The Exorcism," and watch the trailer.

Plus, learn out about the downtown streets where you're most likely to get a parking ticket, and we look into the history of a downtown Wilmington space that's hosted quite a few well-known names over the past 30 years.
