WICHITA, Kan. (KSNW) — A jury has found a Wichita man guilty of a murder in southeast Wichita in 2019.
The victim was 31-year-old Robert Junior . Those who knew him said he was quickly becoming a well-known community activist. In April 2019, he arranged a community event to unite people after the March shooting death of well-known rapper Nipsey Hussle.
Less than eight months later, Junior was fatally shot at his home in the 8500 block of Parkmont, near Pawnee and Rock Road.
“He was a real good guy in the community. He wanted to see change too, and it was tragic that that happened to him,” Elbert Costello, a friend, said .
“I think he leaves an example of giving back and continuing to try and inspire and help people,” Wichita City Council member Brandon Johnson said.
Several days later, the Wichita Police Department found the suspect, Chevy Jones, getting into a car on South Topeka. Officers said he fled, ramming a patrol vehicle. He was then arrested in the Walmart at Pawnee and Broadway .
The district attorney’s office says Jones discovered his ex-girlfriend had slept with Junior. Investigators said Jones attacked the woman, then waited a few weeks and shot Junior.
On Thursday evening, a jury convicted Jones of:
First-degree premeditated murder
Criminal damage to property
Criminal possession of a firearm
Aggravated domestic battery
Domestic battery (misdemeanor)
Battery (misdemeanor)
The sentencing date has not been set.
