WICHITA FALLS ( KFDX/KJTL ) — The day after severe weather rolled through the area, the skies cleared for the Guardians of Freedom Air Show to go out with a bang.

After some people were scared off by the weather on Saturday, Texoma was out in full force to turn their eyes to the sky.

Staff Sergeant Kamakana Pagan said other people from the far corners of the U.S. also watched these accomplished pilots take flight.

“We’ve been having people come down from New York, and we’ve seen some people from California. Most of the people are in-town locals, some from Texarkana, some from Wichita, Kansas,” Pagan said. “We’re really proud to be putting this on for the local community and those that are passionate about air shows that come all the way to Sheppard and Wichita Falls.”

Of all the air acts people came to see this weekend, most probably came to see the Thunderbirds or the stunning air acrobatics.

But others, like Julie Cowan, wanted to see one plane in particular: the fifth-generation fighter, the F-35 Lightning.

“I’m a mechanical engineer, and I did my first internship at a place where we actually made the engines for the F-35. So that was kind of my career goal: to work for F-35s,” Cowan said. “I kind of don’t really get to work with them directly, but I get to see them almost every day.”

The love of planes is a big part of what makes the Guardians of Freedom Air Show unique.

For engineers like Cowan, it’s an opportunity to see something you’ve worked with fly effortlessly through the air.

As the air show continued throughout the day, it was easy to see the lengths that Sheppard Air Force Base went to to put on a good show for Texoma.

“It’s a huge deal, and me being on the inside, working here on the base, working with CE, I know how big of a deal it is. We planned for it for a year, and we’re so excited to have everybody out here. It’s wonderful,” Cowan said.

Wichita Falls eagerly awaits the next Sheppard Air Force Base air show.
