LAUREL BLOOMERY, TENNESSEE - Shirley Widener, a lifelong resident of Laurel Bloomery, TN, often played as a child by a monument that was bigger than life. It was the marker located near Highway 91, honoring American pioneer legend Daniel Boone. She often gazed at the stone monument, shaped like an arrowhead, and wondered about the adventures of the legendary Boone. As she grew older, she would learn the history of Boone and his relationship to this prime hunting and fishing wilderness she called home.
Original owners buy brewery back from Anheuser-Busch
BOONE, N.C. (Gray News) - The co-founders of a North Carolina brewery are buying their business back from Anheuser-Busch. Nathan Kelischek and Chris Zieber founded Appalachian Mountain Brewery in 2011 before entering a partnership with the Craft Brew Alliance and eventually being acquired by the world’s largest brewing company.
Man arrested on drug, gun charges in Washington County, VA
(WCYB) — Deputies in Washington County, Virginia have arrested a man on drug and gun-related offenses. Larry Harless, Jr. was taken into custody Wednesday at a travel plaza in Glade Spring. Deputies say Harless was "slumped behind the running vehicle." Officers also discovered a firearm and more than $14,000 in cash.

Barn fire damages surrounding property
CRUMPLER - A barn fire in Crumpler on Tuesday morning left other property damaged as crews battled to put the flames out. At approximately 5:40 a.m. on May 30, emergency personnel responded to a fire on Choice Center Lane in Crumpler. According to Ashe County Fire Marshal Josh Steelman, a barn was on fire and subsequently damaged two mobile homes, a tag along trailer, a car and a camper. Steelman said that the cause of the fire was ruled as accidental. Jefferson Volunteer Fire Department, New River Volunteer Fire & Rescue, Lansing Volunteer Fire Department, Ashe Medics and the Ashe County Rescue Squad assisted at the scene of the fire.
