Three-quarters of a century ago, artists pioneered summer art school residency programs in Maine, places born not out of significant financial resources but out of necessity. These are places that began as, and continue to be, incubators for a creative life; they are essential, ideally experienced when the artist would benefit most from immersive work and community. “Haystack and Skowhegan were established at a unique moment in time. It would be impossible to bring institutions like these into being in the same way today, and for this we honor, steward, and protect them,” observes Perry Price, the fifth executive director of the Haystack Mountain School of Crafts.
