One hospitalized after crash in Carroll County
HILLSVILLE, Va. (WFXR)– The Hillsville Fire Department reports one person was taken to the hospital after a vehicle crash on Coulson Church Rd on Friday, May 3. According to the fire department, crews were dispatched to the 700 block of Coulson Church Rd on a report of a vehicle crash. Crews arrived to find two vehicles involved in a head-on collision with one patient entrapped.
Carbon monoxide crashes Kids Fest
While moving the planned Kids Fest outdoor festival to an inside venue because of rain proved successful, that change led directly to an uninvited guest showing up: carbon monoxide. The detection of the poisonous and flammable gas in the Reeves Community Center gymnasium Saturday prompted the temporary closure of that area, where five large bounce houses — originally intended for Riverside Park — had been set up, powered by generators. ...

The National EMS Memorial Bike Ride honors Emergency Medical Services personnel by organizing long distance cycling events that memorialize and celebrate the lives of those who serve every day, those who have become sick or injured while performing their duties, and those who have died in the line of duty. Weather forces Kids Fest indoors
Mount Airy Parks and Recreation has announced a change to this weekend's Kids Fest. The event is still going on but due to the threat of poor weather, organizers have moved the festivities inside. In a statement released early Friday they said, "With impending weather the fun of KidsFest at Riverside Park will now be packed into Reeves Community Center." "There will be carnival games, face painting, bounce house obstacle course, sports, performances from regional artists, a magician, balloon artist, B Dazzle Productions with Bubbles and much more. This event is free to the community, and we hope to see everyone at RCC between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. on Saturday, May 4. Also, two participants will leave with a new, shiny bicycle so don't miss out on the fun!"
Woman accused of burning Bible
A Mount Airy woman is facing a felony charge for allegedly burning property belonging to another city resident — including her Bible. Tharrington celebrates Week of the Young Child
Pre-kindergarten students at Tharrington Primary School recently participated in Week of the Young Child, a week-long celebration of preschool students and the early childhood education field. The week began with Music Monday where the students made and decorated maracas. On Tasty Tuesday the students made a yummy snack. On Work Together Wednesday the children worked to create banners for the upcoming Special Olympics. On Artsy Thursday the students created their own masterpieces. The week concluded with Fun Friday where students enjoyed a picnic lunch. “Week of the Young Child was a wonderful way to celebrate and honor our youngest learners,” school officials said.
Surry County Schools request additional officers
Surry County Schools, as part of its budget for the coming year, has made a request to the Surry County Board of Commissioners to add four more school resource officers to staff.
