Silver Diner is opening its first Baltimore County restaurant on The Avenue at White Marsh next week.

The restaurant, which opens May 1, will serve breakfast seven days a week in an 8,000-square-foot space previously held by Barnes & Noble.

A spokesperson for The Avenue said Barnes & Noble elected to operate in a smaller space in the retail development, which counts over a dozen eateries and food stores among its tenants.

While Silver Diner is known for diner staples, like burgers and pancakes, it also has more upscale options, as well as a menu of healthy Mediterranean-inspired dishes.

“It’s a diner with vegan, vegetarian, gluten-free, low-calorie options as well as typical diner fare,” said Vicki Bendure, a spokesperson for Silver Diner.

“There are scallops and crab cakes. If you want to go that route,” she said. “If you just want to eat meatloaf, there’s a meatloaf there too, that people rave about.”

The company said it chose the White Marsh area for its proximity to Interstate 95, noting that it has had success with other restaurants along that corridor.

The Avenue restaurant will be the 23rd for the Mid-Atlantic chain based in Rockville and founded by Ype Von Hengst, a chef, and Bob Giaimo, a restaurateur. The company has various brands throughout New Jersey, Washington, D.C., Virginia and Maryland, including Silver Diners in BWI-Marshall Airport and Columbia.

Bendure said Von Hengst, who is executive chef for the company, has been committed to using local ingredients for over 20 years and sources several items from small local farms.

A few menu items are the very same as they were on Silver Diner’s original menu when it was founded in 1989, she said. One longtime offering the restaurant is known for is its milkshakes in chocolate, strawberry and vanilla.

“They do some twists on that now,” Bendure said, “but the typical milkshakes that they started with 35 years ago are still kind of a go-to for a lot of customers.”

The restaurant will be open from 7 a.m. to 12 a.m. Sunday through Thursday, and 7 a.m. to 1 a.m. on Friday and Saturday.

There will be some unexpected offerings. The Silver Diner outpost in White Marsh will have a full bar and a mixologist.

“It’s not your typical diner,” Bendure said.
