Wheeling, W.Va. (WTRF) – Major news for anyone who drives or walks in downtown Wheeling…Market Street has reopened.

After months of detours and massive traffic disruption, the storm sewer excavation part of the project has now been completed. So as of Monday night, Market Street can now be navigated from one end to the other.

But don’t throw any confetti just yet.

It’s been difficult, especially from 10th to 12th Street. That part of Market Street wasn’t just closed, it was filled with heavy equipment that dug an enormous trench.

Businesses like Taqueria 304, Panda Kitchen and Tito’s Hot Dogs were almost inaccessible at times.

Now Market Street is open, but the streetscape is far from finished.

“That’s not the final product. Probably either later this year or early next spring, Market will be paved to its completion in accordance with the overall streetscape project. But the completion of the Market Street storm sewer project will minimize the significant disruptions that’s occurred in that area.”

    Bob Herron, Wheeling City Manager

The contractor can now focus on the curbs and sidewalks. So Market Street may have some lane restrictions, but at least one lane will be open from now on.

They say it will be like Main Street has been for the past year: open, but clearly under construction.
